MARSHFIELD – One bad inning can turn any baseball game in one direction or the other, and that’s what happened to the Marshfield Clinic Post 54 American Legion team on Friday.

De Pere broke open a one-run game with a five-run fifth inning and went on to defeat Marshfield 10-4 in an elimination game at the Wisconsin Class AAA State American Legion Baseball Tournament on Friday afternoon at Jack Hackman Field.

De Pere (23-9) led 5-4 after 4½ innings before the big rally broke the Blue Devils.

Starting pitcher Bobby Pilz walked the leadoff hitter and was pulled from the game. De Pere greeted reliever Mitch Susa with three straight hits, including an RBI triple by Connor Rutherford and an RBI single by Carson Jacques, to plate a pair of runs.

After a groundout, C.J. Sahas had an RBI single, Mike Lund squeeze bunted in another, and Matt Bald followed with an RBI single to put De Pere up 10-4.

Marshfield struck out seven times in the next three innings and had only two hits over the final four.

“It’s disappointing, but these kids had a great summer,” Marshfield manager Tom Sorenson said. “I probably had the most fun I’ve ever had coaching in a summer league, other than coaching my kids. We were 23-9, that’s pretty good.

“These kids all love the game and that’s why they’re here. I had kids that didn’t get to play a whole lot this year, but they’re waiting for their chance and next year they’ll step up there. It’s hard to get kids to do that now days and I give them all the credit for sticking around.”

De Pere led 5-1 after two innings as Emmett Kulick had an RBI single in the first and a two-run double in the second against Pilz.

The Blue Devils (23-9) got back into it with a three-run third against De Pere starter Tyler Rouze. Trevor Schwecke had an RBI double, Paul Maguire delivered a sacrifice fly, and Jared Klein had an RBI single to make it 5-4. However, Marshfield did not have more than one hit in an inning after that, something that proved to problematic for the Blue Devils in the last week of the season where they ended up losing four of their final five games.

“We had (10) hits and they had 12, we just couldn’t string them together,” Sorenson said. “I can’t explain it. Earlier in the year, if we had 10-11 hits, we had 10, 12 runs. We hit a lot of fly balls. Normally we’re a line-drive, ground ball, beat-it-out team.”

Pilz retired seven in a row after the three-run second before being replaced after walking the leadoff man in the fifth. The loss is Pilz’s first in two seasons for Marshfield, ending a streak that saw him win 12-straight decisions on the mound.

De Pere moves on to a semifinal game against Madison Impact on Saturday at 3 p.m.

Eau Claire Post 53 3, Marshfield Post 54 2
Eau Claire scored three times in the top of the first inning and it proved to be enough as it defeated Marshfield Post 54 in a winners’ bracket Friday morning at Jack Hackman Field.

Eau Claire (28-8) lost the final winners’ bracket game of the tournament Friday night to Madison, 17-0.

Cal Sauro had a bases-loaded double to score two runs and Travis Berg followed with an RBI single to put Eau Claire on top 3-0 against Marshfield starter Jake Brueggen.

Brueggen was able to wiggle out of the inning and from that point was superb.

Brueggen allowed only four base runners in the final eight innings, two of which were erased on inning-ending double plays, and kept Eau Claire off the scoreboard.

Marshfield loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the first inning but couldn’t score.

Finally, in the bottom of the seventh, Marshfield broke through against Eau Claire starter Tanner Halvorson.

Klein and Cole Hoffman had back-to-back singles with one out. After a fly out, Nate McDonald ripped a single up the middle to score Klein, and Hunter Luepke followed with an infield single that scored Hoffman to cut the deficit to one.

The Blue Devils had a base runner in the eighth and ninth innings, but couldn’t get anything else going as Halvorson finished off the win. He ended up with eight strikeouts and two walks.

Brueggen, who after the first inning rally retired 25 of 27 batters, was saddled with the loss. He struck out three and walked three.

Eight of the nine Marshfield starters had at least one hit, with Schwecke earning two.

MARSHFIELD – As the host team, the Marshfield Clinic Post 54 Blue Devils wanted to put forth a good start in its opening game at the Wisconsin Class AAA American Legion Baseball State Tournament.

Thanks to the pitching of Jack Donahue and the ability to manufacture a run when it needed it, Marshfield did that, scratching out a 5-4 win over Sheboygan on Tuesday night at Jack Hackman Field.

The Blue Devils (23-7) will take on Eau Claire (27-7) in a winners’ bracket game at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the double-elimination tournament. Marshfield beat Eau Claire in two out of three matchups this season.

Donahue was roughed up in the first inning, giving up four straight hits to start the game. Dylan Agard’s double with the bases loaded scored a pair to put Sheboygan up 2-0 early. Donahue was able to wiggle out of the inning and settled in nicely after that.

Donahue allowed just two hits in the next five innings, retiring 12 batters in a row at one point, seven via strike out.

“I was throwing too much down the middle, not hitting my corners,” Donahue said. “I started hitting the corners better and started pitching better.”

Marshfield returned the favor, scoring twice in the bottom of the first against Sheboygan starter Weston Jurk.

Trevor Schwecke and Mitch Susa had RBI singles in the frame to tie the game.

The Blue Devils added another in the fourth on back-to-back doubles by Hunter Luepke and Schwecke, and went up 4-2 when Bobby Pilz knocked in Susa on a fielder’s choice bouncer as Susa beat the high throw home from the Sheboygan shortstop.

The lead held until the seventh when Sheboygan scored twice. An error led to one run and Eric Schoemer had an RBI single to tie the game.

Donahue quickly retired the next two batters and was unfazed, setting down the final six in order of the last two innings, seemingly throwing as hard in the ninth inning as he did in the first.

“I felt good,” Donahue said. “There was a lot of adrenaline too. You score that one run, you want to finish off the game.”

Marshfield leadoff hitter Nate McDonald, who was 0-for-4 heading into the ninth, smacked a single to left field to lead off the inning and went to work on the bases. McDonald stole second and moved to third as the throw was high and went into center field. After a strikeout, Schwecke hit a sacrifice fly to right to plate McDonald with what proved to be the winning run.

“We go the way Nate goes and it’s been that way all season,” Marshfield manager Tom Sorenson said. “If he gets on base, we score a run. That’s the way it is.”

Donahue struck out the first two hitters of the ninth and got a groundout to finish off the win. He finished with 13 strikeouts and just one walk.

“He (Donahue) was really tough after that (first inning),” Sorenson said. “I can’t say enough about him. He works so hard and is hard to get off the mound. I planned on not even letting him start the ninth, but when we got the lead I looked at him and he said, ‘I’m ready.’ I couldn’t say no. He’s got all the guts in the world.”

Schwecke ended up with two hits and three RBIs, and Luepke continued his hot hitting of late with a 3-for-5 night and two runs scored for the Blue Devils.

Sheboygan (19-19) moves into the losers’ bracket and will take on Wausau (18-18) in an elimination game at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday.

MARSHFIELD – For the past 18 months, the Marshfield Post 54 American Legion baseball program, and the city itself, have been preparing to host the 2016 Wisconsin American Legion Class AAA State Tournament.

On Tuesday, it all begins.

Play starts at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday at Jack Hackman Field. Four games are scheduled for the first two days of the eight-team, double-elimination tournament, and will continue through Saturday, July 30, when the championship round will be played at 1 p.m. A second game will follow if necessary.

The Wisconsin state champion and runner-up will move on to the Class AAA Great Lakes Regional in Edwardsville, Ill., on Aug. 3-7 where teams will compete for a spot in the Class AAA American Legion Baseball World Series in Shelby, N.C., on Aug. 13-18.

Marshfield has not hosted a state Legion tournament since 1990, and Post 54 has never won one, but the Blue Devils will come in with one of their better teams in program history.

Marshfield is 22-7 entering its opening-round matchup with Sheboygan, which will be played at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the day’s final game.

During the regular season and regional, Marshfield has played against three of the other seven teams at the state tournament, going 4-3. The Blue Devils won two of three previous matchups with Wausau and Eau Claire, and lost their only game against Madison Impact this summer.

Tickets for the tournament are $3 for children ages 5-12, and $5 for those 13 and older, per day. Children under 5 will be admitted free.

MARSHFIELD – A thunderstorm rolled through Marshfield late Wednesday morning, postponing play at the Class AAA American Legion Baseball Regional.

Games resumed at 4 p.m. and Stevens Point defeated Plover 9-5 in an elimination game in the five-team, double-elimination tournament at Jack Hackman Field.

Wausau went on to beat D.C. Everest 10-2 in a winner’s bracket game at 7 p.m. Wednesday, with the Wausau moving on to the championship round on Friday.

Marshfield, which had been scheduled to play at 7 p.m. Wednesday, will now play Stevens Point in an elimination game at 4 p.m. Thursday. The winner will play D.C. Everest at 7 p.m. in another elimination game. The survivor moves on to play in the championship round against Wausau beginning at 1 p.m. Friday. Should Wausau lose, thus suffering its first loss of the tournament, the two teams will play again immediately afterward at approximately 4 p.m.

The winner of the regional tournament earns a spot in next week’s Wisconsin American Legion Baseball Class AAA State Tournament, which will also be held at Jack Hackman Field in Marshfield. Should Marshfield win the tournament, the second-place team would earn a spot in the state tournament, as Marshfield automatically qualifies as the host team.

MARSHFIELD – It was one of those games for the Marshfield Clinic Post 54 American Legion baseball team.

The Blue Devils fell behind 5-0 early and couldn’t recover, falling 9-3 to Wausau Post 10 in a second-round game at the Class AAA regional Tuesday night at Jack Hackman Field.

Marshfield (22-6), which defeated Stevens Point 15-3 earlier in the day in its regional opener, will play the winner of Wednesday’s first game between Stevens Point and Plover in an elimination game at 7 p.m. Wednesday night.

Wausau scored an unearned run against Marshfield starter Jack Donahue in the first inning and added four more in the second as the Bulldogs had four singles. Paul Weise had the big hit in the inning, delivering a two-out, two-RBI single to make it 5-0.

That was more than enough for Wausau pitcher Grant Hill, who went the distance, throwing just 106 pitches in nine innings. Marshfield had nine hits against the right-hander, but the Blue Devils had a runner thrown out at home plate and hit into two double plays.

The Blue Devils played without their No. 3 hitter and starting shortstop Trevor Schwecke, who was hit by a pitch in the win over Stevens Point and suffered an injury to his left arm. His availability is up in the air for the remainder of the double-elimination tournament.

“We had to shuffle people around in that first game with Trevor getting hurt in the first game with a ball hitting him in the elbow,” Marshfield manager Tom Sorenson said. “Paul (Maguire) hasn’t played third base all year, but as a catcher he can react and did a great job there. There were a couple of mental errors and pitching mistakes – when you have it 0-2 (no balls, two strikes) and you give a guy a good pitch to hit. They’re young and learning all the time.”

Marshfield cut it to 5-3 when Bobby Pilz had an RBI infield single and Hunter Luepke scored on an error in the second, and Donahue had an RBI double in the third to plate Paul Maguire.

After that, Marshfield had only five baserunners, with two being erased on double plays.

Wausau added three runs in the final two innings against Marshfield reliever Jason Kurth to finish off the scoring.

Despite the loss, Sorenson said he still feels the Blue Devils are in a good position to rebound in the regional because of their deep pitching staff.

“We’re still in the driver’s seat as far as I’m concerned,” Sorenson said. “We’ll face someone who we have beat two or three times already (this summer), so that just gives you confidence.

“We still have Jake Brueggen and Mitch Susa to pitch, so we’re good for the next two games. Cole Hoffman can relieve, Bobby (Pilz) could come back in a few days for a couple of innings, so we’re in good shape with pitching.”

The Blue Devils scored multiple runs in four of their six at-bats, plating four or more three times, on the way to the rout in seven innings.

Nate McDonald, Paul Maguire and Luepke each had two hits, Donahue drove in a pair of runs and McDonald scored three times for Marshfield. With the RBI in the game against Wausau, Donahue now has 49 RBIs this season, breaking the team record of 46 set by Daulton Varsho in 2013.

Bobby Pilz earned the win with a complete-game effort, striking out four, walking two and scattering eight hits.

Pilz gave up two runs in the second, only one was earned, and was able to wiggle out of trouble in the fifth.

With Marshfield leading 6-2, Pilz walked a pair and had an error attempting to pick a runner off of first. With the bases loaded, Brady Erickson had a sacrifice fly to score Gus Turner-Zick before Pilz struck out the next batter to get out of the jam.

Marshfield responded with four runs in the bottom of the inning without the aid of a hit. A hit batter, three walks, and error and four wild pitches allowed the Blue Devils to build a 10-2 lead.

The Blue Devils put the game away in the sixth scoring five more times. Cole Hoffmann had an RBI single, Braden Bohman was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, and Jason Kurth delivered a sacrifice fly to finish off the scoring.

MARSHFIELD – A Class AAA American Legion baseball regional will be held this week at Jack Hackman Field in Marshfield.

Five teams will be vying for a slot in next week’s Wisconsin Class AAA American Legion State Baseball Tournament, which also will be held in Marshfield.

Play begins Tuesday with opening-round games in the double-elimination tournament. Marshfield (21-5) hosts Stevens Point in the opener at 1 p.m., followed by Plover vs. D.C. Everest at 4 p.m. The winner of the first game will play Wausau in the nightcap at 7 p.m.

Play continues Wednesday and Thursday, with the championship game set for 7 p.m. Thursday. If the loser of that game suffers its first loss in the tournament, the final championship game will be played at 4 p.m. Friday.

The winner of the regional moves on to the state tournament in Marshfield, which will be held July 26-30 as eight teams from around the state will compete in a double-elimination tournament. Marshfield, as the host team, is automatically in the field, so if it would win the regional, the second-place team will advance to the state tournament.

Four games will dot the state tournament schedule beginning at 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday, July 26, and Wednesday, July 27. Three games are scheduled for July 28, starting at 12:30 p.m., and two games will be played July 29 starting at 4 p.m. The championship round will be played at 1 p.m. Saturday, July 30, with a second game immediately following if necessary.

The winner of the Wisconsin state tournament advances to the Great Lakes Regional at Edwardsville, Ill., on Aug. 3-7 where teams will compete for a spot in the Class AAA American Legion Baseball World Series in Shelby, N.C. on Aug. 13-18.
