ASHLAND – Emma Haugen won the floor exercise and vault for Marshfield, which lost a Great Northern Conference dual meet to Ashland 136.35-130.75 on Monday night at Ashland High School.

Haugen won the floor with a score of 9.35 and the vault with a score of 8.65 on her way to a third-place finish in the all-around (33.575). She also tied for third in the uneven bars (8.15).

Brooke McGrath tied for third in the floor (9.05) and Melanie Hafenbredl was third in the vault (8.45) as well for the Tigers.

Marshfield is off until Jan. 18 when it hosts Wisconsin Rapids.

“We really had an excellent vault and floor and did come out on top on those events,” Marshfield coach Allie Dryer said. “Unfortunately our beam was really rough tonight and none of the girls were able to stay on the beam. That really hurt our team score, costing us over five points.

“We have three a few athletes out right now with injuries, and are looking forward to having our full team back soon. In the meantime, I have been impressed with several freshman making their varsity debuts.”

MARSHFIELD – The Marshfield gymnastics team dropped its Great Northern Conference opening dual meet to Stevens Point 133.375-130.7 on Tuesday at Marshfield High School.

Marshfield’s Isabelle Jensen won the balance beam with a score of 8.7 for the Tigers’ lone victory in the four events.

Stevens Point’s Olivia Clemens won the all-around with a score of 34.55, that included event victories in the vault (9.0) and uneven bars (8.3).

Melanie Hafenbredl was second in the uneven bars (9.25), Emma Haugen was third in the vault (8.8), and Jensen and Brooke McGrath tied for third in the floor exercise (8.5) for the Tigers’ other top-three finishes.

“(Stevens Point took the win tonight, but we have definitely closed the gap in comparison to where we used to place against them in the past,” Marshfield coach Allie Dryer said. “Emma had a muscle pull and ended up not competing beam and floor, two events where she is a strong contender for conference titles, which probably affected our team score.

“I was very impressed though with Makenna Yeske stepping into a varsity beam spot and Melanie Hafenbredl’s first night on varsity floor tonight this season. Isabelle Jensen had a great meet tonight winning the beam.”

Marshfield is off until Jan. 6 when it will compete at the Wisconsin Rapids Invitational.

TOMAH – The Marshfield gymnastics team broke a school record set last season and took first place at the Peppermint Twist Invitational on Saturday at Tomah High School.

Marshfield tallied a school-record 133.75 points to outdistance Menomonie by 2.6 points.

“The girls had set the goal of reaching that school record and worked hard to get there today,” Marshfield coach Allie Dryer said. “There was some strong competition today, and I think that pushed the girls a little bit to try and earn every tenth towards their team goal.”

Macey Smith took third in the balance beam (8.65) and ended up second in the all-around with a score 33.625 for the Tigers.

“I hope this will be a great confidence boost for Macey as today she was near the very top of the podium in the all-around, amongst athletes who qualified for the WIAA state tournament in the all-around last season,” Dryer said.

Emma Haugen took third in the vault (8.525) and fifth in the floor exercise (8.95), Brooke McGrath was fourth in the floor exercise (9.325), and Melanie Haffenbredl finished fourth in the uneven bars (8.3) for Marshfield’s other top-five finishes.

RHINELANDER – Emma Haugen and Brooke McGrath each won events to help the Marshfield gymnastics team to a second-place finish at the Snowflake Invitational on Saturday at Rhinelander High School.

Haugen won the vault with a score of 8.875, edging teammate Isabelle Jensen, who had a score of 8.7 to finish second.

McGrath won the floor exercise with a score of 8.95.

“We usually have a meet under our belt before this invite, so I definitely think the first-meet jitters were evident today,” Marshfield coach Allie Dryer said. “We have lots of room to improve from here. We took several falls on beam, as well as some falls on floor. I think our team score will increase drastically once we can improve the consistency.”

Jensen also finished third in the balance beam (8.15) and Macey Smith was fifth in the vault (8.4) for Marshfield’s other top-five finishes.

Ashland won the team title with a score of 131.55, with Marshfield second at 127.025.

MARSHFIELD – The Marshfield gymnastics team held its annual Black vs. Orange Intrasquad Scrimmage on Tuesday at Marshfield High School.

The Black team of Brooke McGrath, Macey Smith, Melanie Hafenbredl, Merrissa Immerfall, Shantel Nienast, Bailey Schmitt, and Makenna Yeske beat the Orange Team of Izzy Jensen, Alexis Mushel, Makenna Gramza, Ally Bakke, Emma Haugen, and Julia Michalek by a score of 124.25-120.55.

“We have 26 athletes, most of them competed on at least one event tonight,” Marshfield coach Allie Dryer said. “It was fun to see that our team is deep enough to really field two quite competitive squads. We competed 14 athletes on each event tonight, though in a varsity competition we get only five per event. This was a chance to get in front of the judges and test out the routines the girls have been preparing to see what will be ready to compete on Saturday.”

McGrath won the vault (9.5) and the floor exercise (8.3), Jensen took first in the balance beam (8.85), and Haugen won the uneven bars (7.85).

“The girls did really well and we are very proud of their accomplishments competing at the state meet,” Marshfield coach Allie Dryer said. “Emma did an excellent bars and floor routine, with her floor routine being the best routine of the season so far. The scores awarded at this meet were significantly lower than we have seen throughout the season, but comparing Emma’s performance on floor today to the rest of the season, she was stronger today than she has been all season on floor.

“Overall it was an excellent opportunity for Marshfield to get competitive experience with the best gymnastics programs in the state, and motivates the team to continue to improve in preparation for next year’s season.”

Samantha Weyker of Kenosha Bradford/Indian Trail/Tremper won the all-around title with a score of 37.967, edging teammate Molly O’Boyle by just more than one point. Weyker also won the vault with a 9.8, tying Franklin/Muskego/Oak Creek/Whitnall’s Abigail Missiaen.

MARSHFIELD – Marshfield sophomores Emma Haugen and Brooke McGrath are part of a gymnastics team that has been making history this season.

Marshfield broke the program record for points in a meet four times this season, the final time coming at last Saturday’s WIAA Division 1 sectional when the Tigers totaled 132.975 points to finish fourth.

Haugen and McGrath will cap off the stellar season for Marshfield at the 2017 WIAA State Gymnastics Meet on Saturday at Wisconsin Rapids Lincoln High School.

McGrath will be making her first state appearance, qualifying in the vault after scoring an 8.9 at sectionals to tie for third place.

Haugen, who placed 22nd in the vault at last year’s state meet, moves on in the all-around and will compete in all four events. She finished second in the vault (9.1), fourth in the balance beam (8.8), seventh in the floor exercise (8.675), and tied for 10th in the uneven bars (8.075) to finish fifth in the all-around with a score of 34.65.

McGrath missed five weeks of the season with a knee injury before returning for the Great Northern Conference Meet on Feb. 18 and finished seventh in the vault. She upped her score at sectionals by more than a point to earn a spot in the state field.

“It was the same vault that I had last year, a front-hand spring full,” McGrath said. “It wasn’t that hard to get back because I’ve been doing it for so long. Now I’m working on a one-and-a-half for state.”

Haugen said she has been working on some new things throughout the season in all of her events, and has improved from a year ago.

“The vault stayed the same (as last year),” Haugen said. “We tried a different one but what I was doing last year, the scores were higher, so we decided to stick with that for a while. I added difficult on beam, bars mostly stayed the same but the scores went up, the routine improved.”

Haugen said she is happy to be able to share the state experience with a teammate, especially McGrath, who she said she has been good friends with since first grade.

“Last year there were a lot of nerves, especially being there by yourself,” Haugen said. “You will still be nervous, it is state, but I’ll be more calm and confident, and having another person there with me will make it a lot easier too.”

McGrath added, “It’s pretty exciting. I wouldn’t want to go with anyone else.”

Marshfield coach Allie Dryer said expectations for Haugen have went up as she prepares for her second try at state.

“Returning to state is a big feat,” Dryer said. “She qualified in just the vault last year, so to go into this year and qualify for vault, and beam, and all-around – three times what she accomplished at sectionals last year, that’s great. We have big hopes for how this could come out for her. Division 1 is no joke, it’s serious competition.”

The record-setting performances for the team throughout the season, as well as getting two individuals to the state meet, has Dryer hoping this is just the start of something special with her program.

“We had just one senior competing in our sectional lineup,” Dryer said. “We’re hopeful that this team can come into next year and start right where we left off this season and go from there. We were only 1.55 points off the state qualification (top two spot at sectionals), so that’s a good spot to be.”

The state team tournament will be Friday, starting at 2 p.m., and the individual portion of the state meet will start at 11:10 a.m. Saturday.

CHIPPEWA FALLS – Marshfield sophomore Emma Haugen will be returning to the WIAA state meet and will be joined by classmate Brooke McGrath after the two earned spots with top-five finishes at the WIAA Division 1 gymnastics sectional on Feb. 25 at Chippewa Falls High School.

Haugen finished fifth in the all-around and will compete in all four events, and McGrath tied for third in the vault to qualify for the 2017 WIAA State Gymnastics Meet next weekend. The two Tigers will compete in the individual portion of the tournament on Saturday, March 4, at Wisconsin Rapids Lincoln High School. Competition begins at 11:15 a.m.

Chippewa Falls (134.725) edged Stevens Point (134.525) for the team title and both will compete in the team tournament on Friday, March 3. Marshfield ended up fourth, setting another program record with 132.975 points. It marks the fourth time this season the Tigers broke the school mark for points in a meet.

“We had a phenomenal day, breaking the school record for the fourth time this season,” Marshfield coach Allie Dryer said. “We started the season with lots of big goals, one to break 130, which we have excelled way beyond the last few meets. Marshfield has never qualified a team to team state, and its something we will continue to work toward next year.”

The top five individuals in each of the four events, as well as the all-around earned spots at the state meet.

Haugen, who competed in the vault at last year’s state meet and finished in 22nd place, totaled 34.65 points in the four events to take fifth place overall in the all-around, which was won by Wisconsin Rapids standout Tia Dorshorst (37.275). Dorshorst won three of the four individual events.

Haugen’s best finish came in the vault, where she placed second with a 9.1. McGrath ended up in a four-way tie for third with an 8.9 to secure her first appearance at state.

“I’m really excited to have made it to state for vault,” McGrath ssaid. “It’s great to be back in the gym after being out for half of the season due to an injury. I’m thankful for my coaches, friends and family for their support and for always believing in me.”

Haugen also finished fourth in the balance beam (8.8), seventh in the floor exercise (8.675), and tied with teammate Melanie Hafenbredl for 10th in the uneven bars (8.075).

Macey Smith finished seventh in the vault (8.8) and McGrath was ninth in the floor (8.625) for Marshfield’s other top-10 individual finishes.
