Pittsville baseball player Jacob Neve has been voted as the WDLB-WOSQ Radio & MarshfieldAreaSports.com April High School Athlete of the Month.

The High School Athlete of the Month Award is sponsored by Marshfield Clinic, Cost Cutters Family Hair Care and Burt Trophy & Awards.

Varsity athletes from the following high schools are eligible to be nominated for the award: Abbotsford, Athens, Auburndale, Colby, Columbus Catholic, Edgar, Granton, Greenwood, Loyal, Marathon, Marshfield, Neillsville, Owen-Withee, Pittsville, Spencer, Stratford and Thorp.

Neve received 590 of the more than 1,600 votes cast.

Other nominees for the April award were Stratford softball player Brittany Bredemann, Spencer softball player Tiffany Meinders, Marshfield track athlete Skyler Theisen, and Auburndale track athlete Rachel Gronemeyer.

Neve helped the Panthers get off to a hot start this season. Through games on April 30, he was batting .543 (19 of 35) with a home run, 12 runs scored, and 11 RBIs at the plate, and was a perfect 3-0 on the mound with a 0.82 earned run average and 30 strikeouts in 25 2/3 innings pitched for Pittsville. The Panthers headed into May 10-2 overall and 4-0 in the Marawood Conference South Division.

Neve joins Columbus Catholic volleyball player Kendra Baierl (September), Columbus Catholic soccer player Nadim Torbey (October), Abbotsford football player Ethan Kramas (November), Owen-Withee girls basketball player Jennifer Wendler (December), Marshfield boys basketball player Ethan Posteluk (January), Columbus Catholic boys basketball player Tyler Fuerlinger (February), and the Stratford wrestling team (March) as winners of the award during the 2016-17 school year.

The Stratford wrestling team has been voted as the WDLB-WOSQ Radio & MarshfieldAreaSports.com March High School Athlete of the Month.

Varsity athletes from the following high schools are eligible to be nominated for the award: Abbotsford, Athens, Auburndale, Colby, Columbus Catholic, Edgar, Granton, Greenwood, Loyal, Marathon, Marshfield, Neillsville, Owen-Withee, Pittsville, Spencer, Stratford and Thorp.

Stratford wrestling garned 165 of the 360 votes cast.

Other nominees for the March award were the Loyal girls basketball team, winners of the WIAA Division 5 state title, and the Marshfield Columbus Catholic boys basketball team that reached the WIAA Division 5 state tournament semifinals.

Stratford won its first-ever state title by rolling past Random Lake 52-13 and Fennimore 49-13 at the WIAA State Team Wrestling Tournament on March 4 at the UW Fieldhouse in Madison. The Tigers won the Division 3 championship by taking 21 of the 28 matches they wrestled at state, including 10 by pin. Senior Mason Kauffman finished off an undefeated season with a pin and a technical fall in the two matches, ending his year with a 34-0 record.

The Stratford wrestling team joins Columbus Catholic volleyball player Kendra Baierl (September), Columbus Catholic soccer player Nadim Torbey (October), Abbotsford football player Ethan Kramas (November), Owen-Withee girls basketball player Jennifer Wendler (December), Marshfield boys basketball player Ethan Posteluk (January), and Columbus Catholic boys basketball player Tyler Fuerlinger (February) as winners of the award during the 2016-17 school year.

Fuerlinger garnered 445 of the nearly 1,600 votes cast during voting at MarshfieldAreaSports.com from March 1-7.

Other nominees for the February award were Marshfield gymnast Emma Haugen, Pittsville boys basketball player Matthew Carlson, Spencer/Columbus Catholic wrestler Hunter Luepke, Stratford wrestler Mason Kauffman, Loyal girls basketball player Morgan Reinwand, and Auburndale boys basketball player Caleb Weinfurter.

Fuerlinger, a senior guard, earned first-team all-Cloverbelt Conference East Division and Player of the Year honors after helping the Dons to their second-straight conference title (15-1) and a 20-2 regular season. Fuerlinger torched opponents to the tune of 25.6 points per game during February. In seven games, Fuerlinger scored 30 or more three times, including a season-high 32 against Greenwood on Feb. 14.

Posteluk, Marshfield’s top scorer this season, averaged 15.7 points per game in six games during January. He scored 19 points in a win over D.C. Evereest on Jan. 6, and had a pair of games with 18 against Wausau West on Jan. 13 and Stevens Point on Jan. 24. In the six games, Posteluk, a senior guard, made 12 of 24 3-point attempts.

Wendler, a 6-foot-2 sophomore, has been a scoring matching for the Blackhawks. In six games in December, five of them wins, Wendler scored more than 20 points four times, including a career-high 37 points in a win over Greenwood on Dec. 22, and 27 in a 13-point victory over Columbus Catholic on Dec. 9. Wendler is averaging 22.8 points per game overall this season for the Blackhawks, who were 6-2 heading into January.

Kramas received 269 of 736 votes cast during voting at MarshfieldAreaSports.com from Dec. 1-7.

Other nominees for the November award were Spencer girls basketball player Lexi Baehr, Edgar football player Alec Hafferman, and Loyal girls basketball player Karsyn Rueth.

Kramas, a senior running back, rushed for 114 yards and a touchdown, and caught a 14-yard touchdown pass in the Falcons’ 35-22 WIAA Division 6 Level 3 playoff win over Coleman on Nov. 4. Against Eau Claire Regis in the WIAA Division 6 state semifinals on Nov. 11, Kramas had 74 yards rushing as the Falcons lost 22-14, their first defeat of the season. Kramas finished with more than 1,100 yards rushing and 13 touchdowns this season as Abbotsford had a 12-1 record.

Torbey, a sophomore, had eight goals in October for the Dons, who finished off an undefeated Mid-State Soccer Conference championship season and reached the WIAA Division 4 sectional semifinals before losing to Arcadia on Oct. 27. Torbey had a goal in the sectional loss and a hat trick in a regional semifinal victory over Nekoosa on Oct. 20.

Baierl, a 6-foot-1 senior middle blocker, has helped lift the Dons off to the most promising season they have had a long while. Baierl passed the 1,000-kill mark for her career with 36 kills in a 3-2 loss to Spencer on Sept. 29, the first Cloverbelt Conference East Division loss by the Dons. Baierl had 311 through Sept. 29, including 81 at the Abbotsford Tournament on Sept. 24.

MARATHON – Marathon High School senior Ryan Gassner has been named the 2015-16 WDLB-WOSQ Radio and MarshfieldAreaSports.com High School Athlete of the Year.

Gassner was chosen by WDLB-WOSQ Radio and MarshfieldAreaSports.com staff for the award, which is also sponsored by Burt Trophy & Awards, Marshfield Clinic and Cost Cutters Family Hair Care of Marshfield.

Varsity athletes from the following high schools were eligible for the award: Abbotsford, Athens, Auburndale, Colby, Columbus Catholic, Edgar, Granton, Greenwood, Loyal, Marathon, Marshfield, Neillsville, Owen-Withee, Pittsville, Spencer, Stratford and Thorp.

Gassner was an all-Marawood Conference choice in three sports, helping the Raiders to conference titles in football, basketball and baseball during the past school year.

Gassner was named Back of the Year during the Marawood football season and Marawood Conference South Division Player of the Year in baseball.

Last fall, Gassner rushed for 1,303 yards, averaging 9.4 yards per carry, and scored 25 touchdowns, including one by kick return. He also added an interception on defense and was a first-team all-Marawood Conference choice at running back and defensive back as the Raiders went 7-0 in conference play.

During the basketball season, Gassner started all 26 games for the Raiders as they went 22-4, reached the WIAA Division 3 sectional finals, and won the Marawood South championship. He averaged 6.5 points, 2.7 rebounds, 1.5 assists, and 1.5 steals per game and was an honorable mention all-conference selection.

Gassner hit .346 with four home runs, 22 RBIs and 13 steals for the Marathon baseball team, which won the Marawood South title with an 11-1 record and finished 19-5 overall. He also went 9-0 pitching with 107 strikeouts in 70 innings. In addition to being named conference player of the year, Gassner was picked as the District Player of the Year, a second-team all-state selection, the Division 3 state co-player of the year, and a first-team all-state academic team selection (3.94 grade-point average) by the Wisconsin Baseball Coaches Association.

We are proud to announce that WDLB-WOSQ Radio & MarshfieldAreaSports.com will continue with the High School Athlete of the Month award throughout the 2016-17 school year. Our first award will be given in September.

Varsity athletes from the following high schools are eligible to be nominated for the award: Abbotsford, Athens, Auburndale, Colby, Columbus Catholic, Edgar, Granton, Greenwood, Loyal, Marathon, Marshfield, Neillsville, Owen-Withee, Pittsville, Spencer, Stratford and Thorp.

Wickman received about 45 percent of the 913 votes cast.

Other nominees for the June award were Spencer track athlete Johanna Ellefson, Marshfield Columbus Catholic track athlete Alexandra Hutchison, and Thorp softball player Lizzy Schimke.

Wickman won the Division 3 girls 400 meters in 56.45 seconds at the WIAA State Track & Field Championships in La Crosse on June 4. Wickman also finished second in the 200 meters in 25.11 seconds, and was part of the Bluejays’ 800-meter relay team, along with Ashley Perkins, Kaylyn Schreiner and Brittany Ange, that took fifth in 1:46.70 to give her three medals at the meet.

Wickman joins Abbotsford volleyball player Makenzie Klieforth (September), Spencer/Columbus football player Noah Zastrow (October), Marshfield girls basketball player Ema Fehrenbach (November), Stratford wrestling Jeremy Schoenherr (December), Stratford girls basketball player Savannah Schillinger (January), Marshfield gymnast Emma Haugen (February), Marshfield track athlete Calden Wojt (March), Athens softball player Hanna Ellenbecker (April), and Marshfield softball player Megan Donahue (May) as winners of the monthly award during the 2015-16 school year.

The WDLB-WOSQ Radio & MarshfieldAreaSports.com High School Athlete of the Year for 2015-16 will be announced July 10.

The Athlete of the Month award will return in September.
