Marshfield boys golf takes team title at D.C. Everest Invitational

WAUSAU – The Marshfield boys golf team won the D.C. Everest Invitational on Friday at Greenwood Hills Country Club.

The Tigers had a team score of 323 to win by six shots over Wauasu West.

Marshfield senior Derek Michalski was meet medalist, shooting a one-under par 71. He had a 31 on the front nine – his second nine of the day – including an eagle on the first hole and birdies on Nos. 4, 6 and 9.

Zach Hanson added an 80, Joe Kirschnik shot an 84, Brendan Schneider had an 88, and Ben Baur had a 91 for the Tigers.

Marshfield plays at the Wisconsin Rapids Triangular, along with Stevens Point, on Monday at Bull’s Eye Country Club.

Marshfield boys golf finishes second at home tournament

MARSHFIELD – The Marshfield boys golf team hosted a five-team tournament on Tuesday at RiverEdge Golf Course.

The Tigers finished second with a score of 339, behind only Stevens Point’s score of 316.

Evan Thomas of Stevens Point was the meet medalist, shooting a 5-over par 77 in windy conditions to beat teammates Max Bancker and Charlie Okray by one shot.

Derek Michalski tied for fourth with an 81 to lead Marshfield. Brendan Schneider added an 83 to tie for sixth, Zach Hanson was 10th with an 86, Nate Boson fired an 89 to finish 11th, and Joe Kirschnick tied for 13th with a 94 for the Tigers.

Marshfield will compete at the D.C. Everest Invitational at Greenwood Hills Country Club in Wausau on Friday.

WISCONSIN RAPIDS – Marshfield senior Derek Michalski earned medalist honors with a two-over par 74 at the Wisconsin Rapids Boys Golf Quadrangular on Tuesday at The Ridges Golf Course.

Michalski led the Tigers to a second-place finish as they finished with a score of 334, 14 shots behind first-place Stevens Point.

Grant Michaelis finished sixth with an 84, Zach Hanson tied for seventh with an 87, and Brendan Schneider tied for ninth with an 89 to round out the Tigers’ scoring. Joe Kirschnik also had a 90 for Marshfield.

Marshfield hosts Antigo, D.C. Everest, Rhinelander and Stevens Point for the Marshfield Invitational on April 18 at RiverEdge Golf Course.

WISCONSIN DELLS – The Marshfield boys golf team finished in sixth place at the two-day Wisconsin Dells Invitational at Trappers Turn Golf Club, which concluded Saturday.

The Tigers, who placed sixth among the 14 Division 1 teams on Friday, were fifth on Saturday shooting a combined score of 332, three shots better than Friday.

Marshfield finished with a combined score of 667, 10 shots behind Wisconsin Valley Conference rival Stevens Point for fifth, and eight shots ahead of conference foe Wausau West.

Waunakee shot a 307 on Saturday and won the team title with a two-day total of 615.

Zach Hanson had Marshfield’s top score, shooting a 78 to tie for 12th on Saturday. Derek Michalski tied for 16th with a 79, Grant Michaelis added an 87, Brendan Schneider had an 88, and Joe Kirschnik rounded out the Tigers’ scoring with a 95.

Wausau East’s Matt Tuman had a three-under par 69 to earn medalist honors on Saturday.

Marshfield will play at the Wisconsin Rapids Invitational at the Ridges Golf Club on Tuesday.

WISCONSIN DELLS – The Marshfield boys golf team opened its 2017 season with competition at the 2017 Wisconsin Dells Boys Golf Invitational.

The two-day event kicked off Friday morning and the Tigers find themselves in sixth place in the Division 1 team standings after 18 holes at Trappers Turn Golf Club.

Zach Hanson shot an 81 and is in a tie for 16th place in the Division 1 field after the first day. Joe Kirschnik had an 83, Derek Michalski shot an 85, Brendan Schneider had an 86 and Grant Michaelis fired an 89 for Marshfield.

Waunakee’s Joe Guerrera leads the tournament after shooting a one-under par 71, and Waunakee sits on top of the team standings.

Play continues Saturday.

VERONA – Columbus Catholic/Spencer senior Ben Alt shot an 83 at the second day of the 2016 WIAA State Boys Golf Tournament to finish in a tie for 23rd place in the Division 2 field at University Ridge Golf Club.

Alt, who shot a 79 and was tied for 13th after Day 1, had an 11-over par score on Tuesday to tie with Thomas Longbella of Chippewa Falls McDonell/Eau Claire Regis for 23rd, 15 shots behind winner Matt Bachmann of Sheboygan Falls.

Bachmann had an even-par 72 and a three-over 75 to finish the two-day tournament at 3-over and won by three over Jacob Michel of Lodi.

Alt only had two pars on the front nine and shot an eight-over par 44. He finished strong with a three-over 39 on the back nine with six pars and three bogeys.

Waukesha Catholic Memorial won the D-2 team title with a score of 15-over par 621, 12 shots ahead of Madison Edgewood Sacred Heart.

Marshfield junior Derek Michalski wrapped up his play at the state tournament with a nine-over par 81, four shots better that his opening round 85 on Monday. Michalski finished at 22-over par and in an eight-way tie for 75th place in Division 1.

Emmet Herb of Middleton rolled to the individual title in D-1, shooting a six-under par 138 (68-70) on the par 72 course. He won by seven shots over Harrison Ott of Milwaukee Marquette and Matt Tolan of Eau Claire North.

Michalski had a pair of birdies Tuesday, on the fourth and 18th holes, and seven pars on his round of 38-43.

Both Alt and Michalski were playing in their first state tournaments.

Milwaukee Marquette won the team title in Division 1 with a score of 22-over 598, eight shots ahead of Middleton.

Fond du Lac St. Mary’s Springs won the Division 3 team title with a 53-over par 629, 27 shots in front of second-place Cochrane-Fountain City. Tyler Leach of Spring Valley won the individual title with a two-round total of 2-over par 146, six shots ahead of Patrick Treichel of St. Mary’s Springs.

VERONA – Columbus Catholic/Spencer senior Ben Alt is in a five-way for 13th place after the first day of the 2016 WIAA State Boys Golf Tournament at University Ridge Golf Club.

Alt shot a seven-over par 79 to finish seven shots behind Division 2 co-leaders Matt Bachmann of Sheboygan Falls and Logan Walzer of Lodi. Alt will tee off at noon on the 10th hole Tuesday as the two-round tournament wraps up.

Alt had birdies on holes No. 1 and 2, and had seven pars and two bogeys to shoot a two-over par 38 on the back nine.

In Division 1, Marshfield junior Derek Michalski shot a 13-par 85 and is in an eight-way tie for 78th place out of the 104-player field.

Michalski had nine-hole scores of 44 and 41. He had one birdie, on the par-4 15th hole, and six pars in his round.

Michalski will tee off on hole No. 1 at noon on Tuesday.

Middleton’s Emmet Herb shot a four-under par 68 and leads by five shots in the Division 1 standings.

Stevens Point, which qualified as a team, is fifth in the team standings after shooting a 311 on Monday. Milwaukee Marquette shot a seven-over par 295 to lead the standings.

Marshfield’s Derek Michalski wins playoff at WIAA Division 1 boys golf sectional to earn spot at state

EAU CLAIRE – Marshfield’s Derek Michalski had a birdie on the first playoff hole to earn a spot in next week’s state tournament after tying for fifth at the WIAA Division 1 boys golf sectional Tuesday at Wild Ridge Golf Club.

Michalski, a junior, shot a three-over par 75 to finish tied for fifth with Michaelem Selissen of Hudson for the third and final individual qualifying spot for the state tournament. In the playoff, Michalski needed just one hole to win the playoff and move on.

Michalski advances to his first WIAA State Boys Golf Tournament, which will be played next Monday and Tuesday, June 6-7, at University Ridge Golf Club in Verona.

River Falls’ Blake Skogen shot an even-par 72 to defeat Eau Claire North’s Matt Tolan and Wausau East’s Matt Tuman by one shot. Tuman won a playoff for second place and also earned an individual slot at state.

Michalski shot a 36 on the front nine and a 39 on the back for his total of 75.

Eau Claire North won the team title with a 302 and Stevens Point was second with a 309 to earn the two team spots at the state tournament.

The top two teams and top three individuals not on those teams qualified for state.

STEVENS POINT – Marshfield junior Derek Michalski earned an individual sectional qualifying spot after finishing sixth at the WIAA Division 1 boys golf regional on Tuesday at Stevens Point Country Club.

Michalski shot a 79 to tie Stevens Point’s Taylor Thomas for sixth place and earn the first of four individual spots at the Division 1 sectional on May 31 at Wild Ridge Golf Club in Eau Claire.

The top four teams and top four individuals not on those teams at the regional qualify for the sectional. The top two teams and top three individuals not on those teams at the sectional will move on to the 2016 WIAA State Boys Golf Tournament at University Ridge Golf Club in Verona on June 6-7.

Stevens Point won the team title with a score of 310. Wausau West (329), Rhinelander (335) and Wausau East (337) also will compete as a team at the sectional. Marshfield finished sixth with a score of 345.

Marshfield’s Grant Michaelis tied for 18th with an 86, missing a chance at a possible playoff for the final individual qualifying spot by just one shot.

Zach Hanson, Joe Kirschnik and Brendan Schneider all shot 90s to finish in a four-way tie for 26th place to round out Marshfield’s scoring.

Wisconsin Valley Conference champion Matt Tuman of Wausau East tied Logan Johnson of Rhinelander for the individual regional championship with a two-over par 74.

MERRILL – Teams wrapped up the seven-meet Wisconsin Valley Conference Boys Golf Tournament on Friday at Merrill Public Golf Course.

Wausau West won the meet with a score of 322, ending Stevens Point’s six-match winning streak in the tournament. Marshfield finished fourth for the fifth meet in a row, ending with a score of 340.

Derek Michalski led Marshfield with an 81, tying for seventh place. He ended up in sixth in the overall standings, earning second-team all-conference. Teammate Zach Hanson finished 10th with an 83 and was 14th in the overall standings to gain honorable mention all-WVC.

Matt Tuman of Wausau East was the meet medalist with a 70, winning by eight strokes over Wausau West’s Josh Yang. Tuman was the WVC individual champion for the second year in a row.

Rounding out Marshfield’s scoring was Grant Michaelis with an 86 and Joe Kirschnik with a 90.
