Marshfield doubles team of Reckner-Cordova lose in 2nd round at WIAA State Individual Boys Tennis Tournament

MADISON – The Marshfield doubles team of Derek Reckner and Jared Cordova had its season come to an end Friday at the 2017 WIAA State Individual Boys Tennis Tournament at Nielsen Tennis Stadium on the University of Wisconsin campus.

Reckner and Cordova, who won their Division 1 No. 1 doubles first-round match Thursday, fell in the second round to Eau Claire Memorial’s Zach Wolfe and Sam Rechek, 6-2, 6-1. Wolfe and Rechek also defeated the Marshfield duo in the championship match at the D-1 sectional last week.

Reckner, a senior, and Cordova, a freshman, finish the season with a 22-5 record.

Wolfe and Rechek (21-2) went on to win two more matches to reach the semifinals where they will face Glendale Nicolet’s Jack Steinberger and Eli Winter (29-2) on Saturday morning.

MADISON – Marshfield’s No. 1 doubles team of Jared Cordova and Derek Reckner won its opening match Thursday at the 2017 WIAA State Individual Boys Tennis Tournament at Nielsen Tennis Stadium.

Cordova, a freshman, and Reckner, a senior, beat Steven Fredeen and Ben Fredeen of Green Bay Southwest 6-2, 6-4, in the opening round of the Division 1 No. 1 doubles tournament.

Cordova and Reckner, now 22-4 this season, will face Zach Wolfe and Sam Rechek of Eau Claire Memorial (18-4) in second-round match at 9 a.m. Friday. Wolfe and Rechek beat the Marshfield duo in the sectional championship match May 24. Third-round and quarterfinal matches are also scheduled for Friday.

The tournament concludes with the semifinals and championship matches, along with consolation matches, on Saturday.

EAU CLAIRE – The Marshfield boys tennis team came up short in its bid for a first-ever trip to the state team tournament as it finished second at the WIAA Division 1 sectional Wednesday at Memorial High School.

Eau Claire Memorial won six of the seven flights to capture the overall team title – combining points from the subsectional and sectional competition – with 53 points. Marshfield was second with 25.

Memorial qualifies for the 2017 WIAA State Team Boys Tennis Tournament in Madison on June 9-10.

Marshfield will have a representative at the WIAA State Individual Boys Tennis Tournament in Madison on June 1-3 as the No. 1 doubles team of Jared Cordova and Derek Reckner (21-4) advanced by finishing second.

Cordova and Reckner won their first two matches before losing in the championship to Zach Wolfe and Sam Rechek of Memorial (81-4).

Reckner, a senior, advances to state for the second-straight year. He paired with Evan Fait to reach the state meet before losing their first match.

“This season has been unbelievable,” Marshfield coach Tom Duncan said. “These boys worked hard during the off-season, attending tennis camps, hitting clinics and tournaments. Their positive attitude and coachability were key ingredients to this successful season. Coach (Grant) Reckner has also been a valuable asset to this program. His encouragement and support towards the team is one of a kind. These boys deserve everything they earned this season.”

Also placing second for the Tigers was the No. 2 doubles team of John Fay and Will Fay (20-4)

Marshfield’s No. 3 doubles team of Luke Kaiser and Ayush Shukla (14-4) placed third, and Fait (15-10), playing at No. 1 singles, was eliminated in the quarterfinals.

TOMAH – The Marshfield boys tennis team took first place in the team standings and advanced three doubles team and one singles player on to sectionals after play at the WIAA Division 1 boys tennis subsectional Monday at La Grange Elementary School.

The Tigers go into sectionals with 18 team points as the Tomah Subsectional teams combine with the Eau Claire North Subsectional teams. The team with the most points after sectionals, which are Wednesday at Eau Claire Memorial, qualifies for the 2017 WIAA State Team Boys Tennis Tpournament in Madison on June 9-10.

The top four finishers in No. 1 singles and doubles, and the top two in all of the other five flights, qualified for the sectional. Only the top four finishers in No. 1 singles and doubles, and the winner of the sectional in No. 2 singles and doubles move on to the 2017 WIAA State Individual Boys Tennis Tournament in Madison on June 1-3. There will also be a number of extra qualifiers announced to the No. 1 flights following completion of all sectionals on Thursday evening.

Marshfield has never qualified for the state team tournament.

Evan Fait (15-9) moves on at No. 1 singles for the Tigers, as does the No. 1 doubles team of Jared Cordova and Derek Reckner (19-3), the No. 2 doubles team of John Fay and Will Fay (19-3), and the No. 3 doubles team of Luke Kaiser and Ayush Shukla (13-3).

Play begins at Eau Claire Memorial at 8:30 a.m. Wednesday.

Marshfield boys tennis wins conference tournament, overall Wisconsin Valley championship

WAUSAU – Marshfield won a pair of doubles and one singles title on its way to capturing the conference championship on Friday at the Wisconsin Valley Conference Boys Tennis Tournament at Wausau East High School.

The Tigers racked up 31 points to win the tournament title, and combined with its regular-season dual meet crown, Marshfield is the overall WVC champ.

Braedon Corteen won the title at No. 4 singles for the Tigers, beating Siam Rezwan of Wausau East 2-6, 6-2, 10-7, in the championship match.

Marshfield’s No. 1 doubles team of Derek Reckner and Jared Cordova cruised to the conference title, beating Josh Beyer of Shane Glinski of Wisconsin Rapids 6-2, 7-5, in the championship match.

Marshfield’s other title came from the No. 2 doubles team of brothers John Fay and Will Fay. They defeated Angus Blakeman and Carter Smigaj of Stevens Point 6-2, 6-2, in the title match.

Sam Haessly (No. 2 singles) and Erick Myklejord (No. 3 singles) finished second, the No. 3 doubles team of Ayush Shukla and Luke Kaiser was third, and Evan Fait (No. 1 singles) took fourth for Marshfield.

Marshfield will compete in the WIAA Division 1 subsectional at Tomah on Monday.

TOMAH – The Marshfield boys tennis team won three duals Saturday to take the team title at the Tomah Quad.

Marshfield beat Tomah, New Richmond and Viroqua finish 3-0.

Evan Fait at No. 1 singles, the No. 2 doubles team of John Fay and Will Fay, and the No. 3 doubles team of Luke Kaiser and Ayush Shukla were individual champions for the Tigers.

Marshfield will finish its regular-season schedule with a nonconference dual meet at Eau Claire Memorial on Tuesday and will compete at the Wisconsin Valley Conference Tournament on Thursday at Wausau East.

WAUSAU – The Marshfield boys tennis team wrapped up an undefeated Wisconsin Valley Conference dual meet season with a 6-1 victory over Wausau West on Thursday at West High School.

Marshfield won all but the No. 1 singles match to finish the WVC season a perfect 5-0. The Tigers will compete at the conference tournament May 18 at Wausau East.

Sam Haessly (No. 2 singles), Eric Myklejord (No. 3 singles), and Braedon Corteen (No. 4 singles) all won in straight sets for Marshfield.

In doubles, the Tigers’ three teams lost just two games.

Marshfield boys tennis finishes 3-1 at Wausau West tournament

WAUSAU – The Marshfield boys tennis team finished 3-1 at the two-day Wausau Area Tennis Invitational on Friday and Saturday at West High School.

The Tigers beat Pulaski 7-0 on Friday and lost to Green Bay Southwest 5-1 as the match was called due to rain.

On Saturday, Marshfield beat Green Bay Preble 4-3 and Bay Port 7-0.

The loss to Southwest was Marshfield’s first in dual action this season.

Marshfield will wrap up its Wisconsin Valley Conference dual meet schedule Thursday at Wausau West.

MARSHFIELD – The Marshfield boys tennis team took a big step toward to its quest for a Wisconsin Valley Conference championship after outlasting Wisconsin Rapids 4-3 in a dual meet Thursday at the Boson Tennis Complex at Marshfield High School.

Both teams came into the match undefeated in the WVC. Marshfield improves to 4-0 with one meet remaining on its conference schedule – May 11 at Wausau West. Wisconsin Rapids is now 2-1.

Evan Fait won at No. 1 singles over Ryan Graczkowski 7-5, 6-1, for Marshfield, and the Tigers swept the three doubles matches to hold on for the win.

Derek Reckner and Jared Cordova won at No. 1 doubles 4-6, 6-1, 6-4; John Fay and Will Fay rolled 6-0, 6-2, at No. 2; and Luke Kaiser and Ayush Shukla cruised to a 6-2, 6-0, victory at No. 3 for Marshfield.

Marshfield will compete at the Wausau West Invitational on Friday and Saturday.

APPLETON – The Marshfield boys tennis team continued its hot start to the season by taking first place at the Appleton West Invitational on Saturday.

The Tigers medaled in all seven flights, which included three champions – Braedon Corteen at No. 4 singles, the No. 1 doubles team of Jared Cordova and Derek Reckner, and the No. 3 doubles team of Luke Kaiser and Ayush Shukla.

Craig Paulman at No. 3 singles and the No. 2 doubles team of John Fay and Will Fay finished second, while Evan Fait at No. 1 singles and Sam Haessly at No. 2 singles took third place.

Marshfield won the team title with 32 points, with Kimberly second with 24 and Appleton North third with 22.

Marshfield returns to action Thursday with a Wisconsin Valley Conference dual at home against Wisconsin Rapids. The Tigers are off to a 3-0 start in conference play.
