Marathon pulls past Auburndale football

MARATHON – Marathon quarterback Donavon Free rushed for 177 yards and two touchdowns, and threw for 179 more as the Raiders topped Auburndale 35-13 in a Marawood Conference football game Friday night at Marathon High School.

Marathon remains unbeaten in the Marawood Conference at 3-0 and improves to 5-1 overall. Auburndale is now 3-3 and 2-2 in conference play.

Free had touchdown runs of 28 and 8 yards, and Dyllan Seehafer added a 4-yard TD run to give Marathon a 21-0 with 4:11 to go in the second quarter.

Auburndale responded with a 45-yard touchdown pass from Ryan Isaacson to Colton Yeske, but Marathon added two more third-quarter touchdowns to pull away.

Marathon outgained the Apaches 493-268 in the victory.

Auburndale hosts Stratford next Friday, Sept. 29.

Auburndale volleyball swept by Marathon

AUBURNDALE – The Auburndale volleyball team dropped a home Marawood Conference South Division match to Marathon 3-0 on Tuesday.

Marathon won 25-18, 25-21, 25-17, sending the Apaches to a 1-2 record in conference play.

Hannah Bolder had eight kills, Mackenzie Raab had 13 digs and eight assists, and Rachael Bolder had eight assists and six digs in the loss for Auburndale.

Auburndale has a week off until it plays at Edgar on Sept. 26.

Auburndale girls, Marshfield boys win divisional team titles at Smiley Cross Country Invitational

WAUSAU – The Auburndale girls and the Marshfield boys cross country teams continued their great start to the 2017 season by winning divisional titles at the 60th Annual Smiley Cross Country Invitational on Saturday at Tribute Golf Course.

The meet was hosted by Wausau East.

The Auburndale girls rolled to the Division 3 team title with 89 points, 21 better than second-place Rosholt. Spencer finished 11th with 273 points.

Marissa Ellenbecker of Edgar won the Division 3 individual title in 19:09.29. Auburndale’s top finisher was Isabella Jewell, who finished ninth in 20:11.15. Kali Karl was 15th (21:00.77), Vanessa Mitchell took 18th (21:11.58), Errika Zenner was 20th (21:12.69) and Anna Kollross finished 28th (21:59.69) for Auburndale.

Spencer’s top finisher was Kaitlin Kasch, who took 32nd in 22:12.75.

The Marshfield girls finished sixth in the Division 1 Small Division, which was won by Pulaski.

Sophia Schrodi finished 12th in 20:20.08 to lead the Tigers.

The Marshfield boys had its five top runners finish in the top 19 to win the Division 1 Small Division team crown. The Tigers had 66 points, 12 ahead of La Crosse Central.

Joseph McKee was seventh in 16:33.18 and teammate Jordan Dzikowich was right behind in eighth (16:33.40) for Marshfield.

Addison Hill took 15th (16:55.80), Jared Oemig was 17th (17:10.43), and Joshua McKee took 19th (17:15.04) to round out Marshfield’s scorers.

All five Marshfield boys, and Schrodi on the girls side, were meet medalists with top-20 finishes.

“Our top five boys came in within 45 seconds of each other and that is huge with so many runners in the field,” Marshfield coach Dan Akin said.

In Division 3, Rosholt had three top-10 finishers and won the team title with 30 points. Spencer was ninth with 220 and Auburndale 11th with 254.

Collin Nieman was 20th in 18:02.23 and Aaron Pankratz took 32nd in 18:22.38 to lead Spencer.

Auburndale’s top runner was Carl Lundgren, who ended up 29th in 18:15.71.

Late TD pushes Auburndale football past Tomahawk

TOMAHAWK – The Auburndale football team earned a big road win in Marawood Conference play on Friday night, edging Tomahawk 20-13 at Tomahawk High School.

Quarterback Ryan Isaacson scored on a 3-yard touchdown run with just 9 seconds remaining to lift the Apaches to the victory in a back-and-forth game.

The win improves Auburndale’s record to 3-2 overall and 2-1 in the Marawood Conference. The Apaches will need to win just one of their final four games break even in the conference and likely earn a second-straight WIAA playoff berth.

Tomahawk is now 1-4 overall and 0-3 in the Marawood.

Auburndale pulled out the win with a pair of fourth-quarter touchdowns.

Jacob Peplinski scored on a 14-yard run in the first quarter to put Auburndale ahead and the Apaches led 7-0 at halftime.

Tomahawk tied the game with a third-quarter touchdown pass before Auburndale pulled back in front on a 3-yard touchdown run by Ryan Isaacson in the opening minute of the fourth quarter.

After Tomahawk tied the game again with a TD pass with just 2:31 to go, the Apaches drove down the field, and Isaacson ran in from the 3 with just 9 seconds remaining to lift Auburndale to the victory.

Trayton Weister rushed for 114 yards to lead the Auburndale offense.

Auburndale plays at Marathon next Friday, Sept. 22.

Auburndale volleyball tops Assumption for first Marawood South win

AUBURNDALE – The Auburndale volleyball team earned its first Marawood Conference South Division win of the season, sweeping Wisconsin Rapids Assumption 3-0 on Thursday at Auburndale High School.

The Apaches won 25-16, 25-21, 25-23, to improve to 1-1 in conference play.

Alexis Soppe had 12 digs and four service aces, Mackenzie Raab had 21 assists and six digs, and Rachael Bolder had seven kills and seven digs for the Apaches.

Lauren Dillinger also had seven kills and Marissa Ponshock added six kills for Auburndale in the victory.

Auburndale hosts Marathon in another Marawood South match on Tuesday.

Auburndale girls win team title at Stratford Cross Country Invitational

STRATFORD – The Auburndale girls had its best five finishers in the top 10 and cruised to the team title at the 2017 Stratford Cross Country Invitational on Tuesday.

The Apaches had just 31 points, winning the girls title easily over second-place Marathon (84) and Mosinee (85). Spencer was fourth with 115 points and Stratford took fifth with 123.

Isabella Jewell led Auburndale by taking third place in 22:16.5, 25 seconds behind winner Anna Buchberger of Marathon. Prentice’s Serena Moore was second in 21:56.7.

Kali Karl was fifth (22:49), Vanessa Mitchell took sixth (22:51), Errika Zenner was seventh (23:16), and Taylor Stanton finished 10th (23:43) for the Apaches. Anna Kollross finished 11th as well for Auburndale.

Macie Schillinger was ninth for Stratford (23:33.1) and Kaitlin Kasch topped Spencer by taking 12th (24:01.1).

Marathon won the boys team title with 61 points, 13 better than Mosinee. Stratford was fourth (105), Spencer fifth (123), and Auburndale seventh (137).

Nicholas Rogaczewski of Athens won the boys race, finishing 20 seconds ahead of Mosinee’s Grayton Barrett.

Stratford’s James Heeg took third in 19:00.6 and Isaac Thompson was 18th in 20:13.0 for the Tigers.

Spencer’s top runner was Aaron Pankratz, who finished 10th in 19:48.3, and teammate Collin Nieman took 17th in 20:11.6.

Carl Lundgren led Auburndale, finishing ninth in 19:42.6.

Auburndale, Spencer and Stratford will compete at the Smiley Invitational at Tribute Golf Course in Wausau on Saturday.

AUBURNDALE – The Auburndale volleyball team swept a nonconference match with Owen-Withee on Tuesday night, winning 25-19, 25-19, 25-15, at Auburndale High School.

Hannah Bolder had seven kills, Mackenzie Raab had 11 assists and 10 digs, and Rachael Bolder had 12 assists for the Apaches.

Alexis Soppe and Raab each had four service aces, and Lindsay Petersen added eight digs for Auburndale

Auburndale will host Wisconsin Rapids Assumption for a Marawood Conference South Division match Thursday at 7 p.m.

Stratford wins title, Columbus Catholic fourth at Auburndale Volleyball Invitational

AUBURNDALE – Stratford lost just one set in its six matches to run away with the team title at the Auburndale Volleyball Invitational on Saturday at Auburndale High School.

Stratford defeated Auburndale 2-0, Prentice 2-0, Wisconsin Rapids Assumption 2-0, Pittsville 2-0, Columbus Catholic 2-0, and Stevens Point Pacelli 2-1 to win the championship.

Mazie Nagel had 49 kills and 52 digs, Makayla Krall had 33 digs, Jadyn Dahlke had 69 assists and Brooke Peterson had 65 assists for the Tigers.

Marshfield Columbus Catholic placed fourth after reaching the final four.

Columbus Catholic placed fourth, finishing 3-3 overall. The Dons went 3-1 in pool play as they came back from a 2-0 loss to Mosinee to beat Iola-Scandinavia 2-0, Auburndale 2-1, and Spencer 2-0.

Columbus advanced to the gold bracket before losing to Stratford 2-0 in the semifinals, and Mosinee again 2-1 in the third-place match.

“The team played some good ball today,” Columbus coach Kat Egle said. “Our losses came to some high-caliber volleyball teams. It is exciting to see our team improve.”

Maren Seefluth had 28 kills and 43 digs, Annie Baierl had a team-high 68 digs, and Brooke Neider had 96 assists for the Dons. Jessica Jakopin added 25 kills, Kenzie Hansen had 20 kills, and Katie Hall chipped in 45 digs for the Dons in their six matches.

Spencer went 1-4, losing all three of its pool games.

The Rockets lost to Auburndale 25-19, 25-13; Mosinee 25-17, 25-13; and Columbus Catholic 25-10, 25-16. Spencer defeated Iola-Scandinavia 25-23, 25-16, before dropping its final match to Wisconsin Rapids Assumption 25-21, 25-19.

Lexi Baehr had 21 kills, nine service aces, and 29 digs; and Sadie Mercier had 48 assists and 19 digs for Spencer in its five matches.

“Passing and serve receive let us down all day,” Spencer coach Buff Heller said. “We are improving a lot of areas, but we need to work harder.”

Auburndale did not report statistics or results to MarshfieldAreaSports.com.

Spencer plays at Rib Lake on Monday, Stratford is at Colby on Monday and hosts Edgar on Tuesday, Columbus returns to action Thursday at Neillsville, and Auburndale will play a nonconference match at home Tuesday against Owen-Withee.

Marshfield boys finish second at SPASH Panther Cross Country Invitational

STEVENS POINT – The Marshfield boys cross country team continued its strong start to the season by taking second at the SPASH Panther Invitational on Saturday at Standing Rock Park.

Stevens Point won the boys team title with 73 points, with Marshfield a close second with 91. Auburndale was 16th with 437 points.

Marshfield had three medalists finishing in the top 15, led by senior Jordan Dzikowich, who took sixth in 17:01.3. Joseph McKee was right behind in seventh (17:02.1) and Addison Hill was 13th in 17:06.1. Jared Oemig ended up 27th (17:36.2) and Carter Chojnacki was 38th (18:07.6) to round out the Tigers’ top five.

“Our top four guys were ready to race today,” Marshfield coach Dan Akin said. “We wanted to run well on this course because the (Wisconsin Valley) conference meet is there in five weeks.”

Rosholt’s Adam Rzentkowski won the boys race in 16:25.1, 18 seconds ahead of Beaver Dam’s Cade Ferron. Stevens Point’s Johnny Hyland was third in 16:53.1.

Carl Lundrgen was Auburndale’s top runner, taking 63rd in 18:48.6.

Stevens Point also won the girls title with 102 points, 16 ahead of Beaver Dam. Auburndale was eighth with 192 points, and Marshfield 10th in 302 points.

Isabella Jewell was Auburndale’s top runner as she finished 18th in 21:03.6.

Senior Sophia Schrodi led Marshfield, taking 21st in 21:16.7.

Jada Donaldson of Beaver Dam won the girls race in 19:42.0, less than 1 second ahead of Wausau West’s Brooke Jaworski.

Unbeaten Edgar shuts out Auburndale football

AUBURNDALE – Defending WIAA Division 7 state champion and perennial powerhouse Edgar rolled into Auburndale on Friday night for a Marawood Conference football game, and the Apaches didn’t have an answer for a tough Edgar defense.

The Wildcats held Auburndale to just 62 total yards and forced four turnovers in a 43-0 victory at Auburndale High School.

Edgar remains perfect on the season, improving to 4-0 overall and 2-0 in the Marawood Conference, while Auburndale sees its two-game winning streak snapped and drops to 2-2 overall and 1-1 in conference play.

Kaleb Hafferman returned an interception 16 yards for a touchdown and Edgar scored five times in the first half.

Edgar quarterback Karson Butt had a pair of touchdown runs, and Ty Guden and Cole Literski added two more as the Wildcats built a 36-0 lead by halftime.

Mason Stoudt had the final rushing score for Edgar in the fourth quarter.

The Wildcats ripped off 227 yards rushing on just 32 carries, with Williams Raatz leading the way with 61 yards.

Auburndale’s top rusher, Jacob Peplinski, was limited to just 34 yards on 12 carries, and quarterback Ryan Isaacson completed just two passes and was intercepted three times in the loss. Auburndale managed just two first downs in the game.

Auburndale plays at Tomahawk (1-3, 0-2 Marawood) next Friday, Sept. 15, at 7 p.m.
