Columbus/Spencer’s Ben Alt finishes 23rd, Marshfield’s Michalski 75th at WIAA State Boys Golf Tournament

VERONA – Columbus Catholic/Spencer senior Ben Alt shot an 83 at the second day of the 2016 WIAA State Boys Golf Tournament to finish in a tie for 23rd place in the Division 2 field at University Ridge Golf Club.

Alt, who shot a 79 and was tied for 13th after Day 1, had an 11-over par score on Tuesday to tie with Thomas Longbella of Chippewa Falls McDonell/Eau Claire Regis for 23rd, 15 shots behind winner Matt Bachmann of Sheboygan Falls.

Bachmann had an even-par 72 and a three-over 75 to finish the two-day tournament at 3-over and won by three over Jacob Michel of Lodi.

Alt only had two pars on the front nine and shot an eight-over par 44. He finished strong with a three-over 39 on the back nine with six pars and three bogeys.

Waukesha Catholic Memorial won the D-2 team title with a score of 15-over par 621, 12 shots ahead of Madison Edgewood Sacred Heart.

Marshfield junior Derek Michalski wrapped up his play at the state tournament with a nine-over par 81, four shots better that his opening round 85 on Monday. Michalski finished at 22-over par and in an eight-way tie for 75th place in Division 1.

Emmet Herb of Middleton rolled to the individual title in D-1, shooting a six-under par 138 (68-70) on the par 72 course. He won by seven shots over Harrison Ott of Milwaukee Marquette and Matt Tolan of Eau Claire North.

Michalski had a pair of birdies Tuesday, on the fourth and 18th holes, and seven pars on his round of 38-43.

Both Alt and Michalski were playing in their first state tournaments.

Milwaukee Marquette won the team title in Division 1 with a score of 22-over 598, eight shots ahead of Middleton.

Fond du Lac St. Mary’s Springs won the Division 3 team title with a 53-over par 629, 27 shots in front of second-place Cochrane-Fountain City. Tyler Leach of Spring Valley won the individual title with a two-round total of 2-over par 146, six shots ahead of Patrick Treichel of St. Mary’s Springs.

VERONA – Columbus Catholic/Spencer senior Ben Alt is in a five-way for 13th place after the first day of the 2016 WIAA State Boys Golf Tournament at University Ridge Golf Club.

Alt shot a seven-over par 79 to finish seven shots behind Division 2 co-leaders Matt Bachmann of Sheboygan Falls and Logan Walzer of Lodi. Alt will tee off at noon on the 10th hole Tuesday as the two-round tournament wraps up.

Alt had birdies on holes No. 1 and 2, and had seven pars and two bogeys to shoot a two-over par 38 on the back nine.

In Division 1, Marshfield junior Derek Michalski shot a 13-par 85 and is in an eight-way tie for 78th place out of the 104-player field.

Michalski had nine-hole scores of 44 and 41. He had one birdie, on the par-4 15th hole, and six pars in his round.

Michalski will tee off on hole No. 1 at noon on Tuesday.

Middleton’s Emmet Herb shot a four-under par 68 and leads by five shots in the Division 1 standings.

Stevens Point, which qualified as a team, is fifth in the team standings after shooting a 311 on Monday. Milwaukee Marquette shot a seven-over par 295 to lead the standings.

CHIPPEWA FALLS – Marshfield Columbus Catholic/Spencer senior Ben Alt is moving on to the state meet after shooting an even-par 71 and finishing third at the WIAA Division 2 boys golf sectional on Tuesday at Lake Wissota Golf Course.

Alt finished three shots behind sectional champion Thomas Longbella of McDonell/Regis and one behind Nick Anderson of Gale-Ettrick-Trempealeau to earn the third and final individual qualifying spot for the WIAA State Boys Golf Tournament, which will be held next Monday and Tuesday, June 6-7, at University Ridge Golf Club in Verona.

The top two teams – Bloomer and Hayward – and the top three individuals not on those teams qualified for the state tournament.

Alt had nine-hole scores of 35 and 36 to fire the even par round and move on to the state tournament for the first time in his career.

BLACK RIVER FALLS – Columbus Catholic/Spencer golfer Ben Alt will move on to sectionals after shooting a 75 to finish tied for third at the WIAA Division 2 boys golf regional on Tuesday at Skyline Golf Course.

Alt, a senior, earned one of four individual sectional spots reserved for the top four finishers not on the top four teams that qualify for sectionals automatically.

Columbus Catholic/Spencer finished ninth in the 10-team regional with a score of 392.

Derek Porter had a 103, Josh Rudolph had a 106, and Matt Olson and James Hinrichsen each had 108s to round out the scoring for Columbus/Spencer.

Alt will compete at the Division 2 sectional at Lake Wissota Golf Club in Chippewa Falls on May 31. The top two teams and top three individuals not on those teams at the sectional qualify for the 2016 WIAA State Boys Golf Tournament at University Ridge Golf Club in Verona.

ASHLAND – Columbus Catholic/Spencer boys golfer Ben Alt lost a playoff for the final individual spot at next week’s state meet on Tuesday at the WIAA Division 2 boys golf sectional at Chequamegon Bay Golf Club.

Alt, a junior, shot an 80 to tie for fourth place overall and for the third and final individual state meet berth. He lost a playoff to Will Gauper of Somerset.

Bloomer won the team title with a score of 338, three shots better than Hayward. The two teams move on to the 2015 WIAA State Boys Golf Championships at University Ridge Golf Club in Verona on June 8-9.

Sparta’s Brett VonRuden had a 78 and Nick Anderson of Gale-Ettrick-Trempealeau had a 79 to secure the top two individual qualifying spots. The top three individuals not on the top two teams also earn a spot at the state meet.

Andrew Zillmer of Bloomer had a 78 to tie VonRuden for medalist honors.

TREMPEALEAU – Junior Ben Alt scot a 79 to finish third for the Columbus Catholic/Spencer boys golf team at the WIAA Division 2 regional on Wednesday and earned a spot in next week’s sectional.

Nick Anderson of Gale-Ettrick-Trepealeau shot a 74 to win the regional title at Trempeleau Mountain Golf Club. The meet was hosted by Arcadia.

Matt LaFaunge of Black River Falls finished second with a 77, and Alt was next with a 79 and earned one of the four individual spots on the D-2 sectional on June 2 at Chequamegon Bay Golf Club in Ashland.

Columbus Catholic/Spencer finished eighth out of 10 teams in the standings with a score of 396. Gale-Ettrick-Trempealeau had a 330 to edge Aracadia by two for the regional team title.

Rounding out the scoring for the Dons were Derrick Porter with a 96, Donavan Fox with a 109, James Hinrichsen with a 112 and Matt Olson with a 121.

The top two teams and top three individuals not on those qualifying teams will advance to the 2015 WIAA State Boys Golf Championshps at University Ridge Golf Club in Verona on June 8-9.

CUMBERLAND – Columbus Catholic/Spencer sophomore Ben Alt tied for ninth with an 82 and came up two shots short of a state tournament berth at the 2014 WIAA Division 2 boys golf sectional at Cumberland Golf Club on Tuesday.

Alt, who won the Adams-Friendship regional at Northern Bay Resort last week, had a 10-over par 82 to finish in a six-way tie for ninth place. Gabby Curtis of Altoona (76), Jordan Duffy of Hayward (78) and Michael McDonald of Hayward (80) earned the three individual qualifier spots.

Osceola (315) and Ellsworth (338) topped the team standings to also earn berths at the 2014 WIAA State Boys Golf Championships next Monday and Tuesday at University Ridge Golf Course in Verona.

ARKDALE – Marshfield Columbus Catholic/Spencer sophomore Ben Alt took medalist honors with a 73 to win the WIAA Division 2 boys golf regional Tuesday at The Castle Course at Northern Bay Resort.

Alt won by four shots over Black River Falls’ Matthew LaFaunge and was Columbus Catholic/Spencer’s lone sectional qualifier.

Columbus Catholic/Spencer finished a team score of 364 and ended up in eighth place.

The top four teams and top four individuals not on those teams move on to the WIAA Division 2 sectional at Cumberland Golf Club on June 3.

Black River Falls won the team title with a 344, two shots better than Arcadia. West Salem (347) was third and Sparta (354) took fourth.

Rounding out the scoring for Columbus Catholic/Spencer was Alex Baierl and David Schlinsog with 95s, Nick Johnson with a 101 and Evan Nikolai with a 108.

Alt had five birdies, including three on the back nine, but double-bogeyed No. 18 to finish at one-over par.

TREMPEALEAU – The Marshfield Columbus Catholic/Spencer boys golf team’s season came to an end with a 10th-place finish at the WIAA Division 2 regional on Tuesday at Trempealeau Mountain Golf Club.

Altoona won the regional title with a score of 336, two shots ahead of Arcadia. Bloomer was third (349) and West Salem fourth (351) to advance to the Division 2 sectional at Turtleback Golf Course in Rice lake on May 29.

Columbus/Spencer finished with a 391 to come in last among the 10 teams at the regional meet.

Gabby Curtis of Altoona won meet medalist honors with a sizzling one-under par 70.

Nick Johnson led Columbus/Spencer with a 92. Rounding out the Dons’ scoring were Ben Alt and Alex Baierl, who each shot 99s, David Schlinsog with a 101 and Dan Herder with a 104.

SPARTA – The Marshfield Columbus Catcholic/Spencer boys golf team’s season came to an end with a ninth-place finish Tuesday at the WIAA Division 2 regional at River Run Golf Course.

Columbus/Spencer shot a team total of 380, finishing nine shots out of eighth place and ahead of only two teams at the 11-team meet.

Sparta won the regional title with a 319 and will be joined at the Division 2 sectional at Amery on May 29 by La Crosse Aquinas (329), Altoona (333) and Bloomer (351).

Gabby Curtis of Altoona shot a 68 to win medalist honors by nine shots over Sparta’s Mitchel Pauley.

Daniel Herder and Zach Strobel led Columbus/Spencer with a 92, tying for 26th place with four others.

Alex Baierl added a 94, Nick Johnson shot a 102 and Jake Puent had a 103 to round out the score for Columbus/Spencer.
