MARSHFIELD – The Marshfield girls golf team are short in numbers, but second-year coach Ashley Lorenzen is hoping this season will be a positive step toward the future.

Junior Roma Shah is the only returning golfer for the Tigers and will be joined on the team this year by sophomore Megan Vandehey, leaving Marshfield without a full team for the upcoming season.

Lorenzen said the Tigers have decided to cancel in its tournament schedule, instead focusing on the Clover Valley Golf League meets and individual improvement.

“Due to the small team, a rebuilding year of sorts, we will just be participating in the CVGL meets,” Lorenzen said. “We have decided to forego the invitational and focus on skill building this year. Both of the golfers are appreciative of this decision. I am looking forward to a good skill building year and then next year being competitive.”

Shah was the Tigers’ fifth-ranked golfer last season, but will bring her two years of experience into the 2016 campaign in hopes of continued improvement.

“She struggled with consistency and her swing, but already in the first two days of practice I have seen much improvement and a more consistent and better swing than all of last year,” Lorenzen said. “I am looking forward to seeing her continue to grow even more this year and shave strokes off her score.”

Lorenzen added that Vandehey has definite promise in the coming years.

“She has a gorgeous swing and with a year of intense practice, I think she is going to be a real competitor in her junior and senior years,” Lorenzen said. “She can drive the ball 200 yards straight down the middle. We will work hard on the short game this year as well as course management.”

Lorenzen said she is hopeful more girls will come out for the sport in the future.

“We struggle at the high school level since in middle school golf is in the spring, but in high school it is in the fall and many girls wish to play volleyball,” Lorenzen said. “If we can get a good youth program in the Marshfield area I think we will see our numbers grow for girls golf at the high school level.”

The Tigers begin their season Aug. 24 with a CVGL meet at Stanley-Boyd. Marshfield hosts its only meet of the season Sept. 20 at Marshfield Country Club. Click here for the team’s full season schedule.
