National Junior Tennis League holds third competition in Marshfield

MARSHFIELD – A total of 47 Marshfield area youths participated in the third National Junior Tennis League Competition of the summer on Friday.

The afternoon started with the U10 group, which played three mini-court competitions against the other four teams of U10 players. The U10 players tried to win a points by beating their coaches (members of local high school tennis teams) in singles or doubles. The U10 players joined together on one court for their favorite tennis game of JAIL, where in order to win you have to hit the ball across the net and into the court without another player catching your ball.

U10 champions for the day were the Flamin’ Aces (Kendra Tremmelling, Kacy Wesolowski and Gracia Sandok) scoring 55 points for their team/

The U14 players took the court and played four-game sets of singles and doubles to earn points for their team.

U14 champions were the Racquet Scientists (Maria Garcia, Nick Okon, Mitch Ott, Ryan Rodeghier, Toni Schmitt, Ashely Schultz, Hunter Schultz, Sam Trudeau and Jackson VenDenHeuvel), scoring 103 points for their team.

The fourth and final competition will be Thursday, Aug. 5 (rain date – Friday, Aug. 6) at the JD Boson Courts.

Marshfield Area Doubles Tournament set for Aug. 7-8

MARSHFIELD – The Marshfield Tennis Association will hold its annual Marshfield Area Doubles Tournament on Aug. 7-8 at the Boson Courts.

Divisions are available in A flight, B flight, over 40, 17-and-under and 14-and-under for both men and women. Mixed doubles divisions will be held in A and B flights, seniors over 40, 17-and-under, 14-and-under and 12-and-under.

Interested players may be obtained at the Sports Den, the Marshfield Parks and Recreation Department, or online at

Dolezal wins gold medal at Pan American Championships

MANAUS, Brazil – Marshfield High School wrestler Brad Dolezal won a gold medal last weekend at the FILA Pan American Cadet Championships.

Dolezal won at 152 pounds (69 kilograms) in the Greco-Roman division, helping the United States team to the team title with 65 points, four points ahead of Brazil. The USA team was second in the freestyle division with 78 points. Canada won with 84 points.

Dolezal also finished second in the freestyle competition at the same weight. He beat Carlos Cespedes of Peru, Richard Maura of Brazil and Christian Rivas of Ecuador before losing to Reid Watkins of Canada in the championship match.

In Greco-Roman, Dolezal beat Cespedes and Daniel Ferreira of Brazil to win the title.

In all, the U.S. team won six gold medals, three in each style.

Wisconsin Rapids’ Rylan Lubeck also won a gold medal in Greco-Roman, winning at 138.75 pounds (63 kg).

Three area players take part in all-star football games

OSHKOSH – Marshfield High School graduates Kody Wilson and Ryan Danczak, and Stratford High School grad Indy Spindler competed in the 2010 Wisconsin Football Coaches Association All-Star Games at Titan Stadium on Saturday.

Wilson, a defensive back, and Danczak, a wide receiver, competed for the North team in the Division 1-3 Large School game. The North beat the South 22-20 in overtime.

Danczak caught one pass for 17 yards for the North.

The teams combined for 468 yards rushing, led by Tomah’s Joel Sweeney, who had a game-high 96 yards and scored the touchdown on an 80-yard touchdown run in the first quarter for the North. Sweeney also scored what proved to be the game-winning points on a two-point conversion in overtime.

Brookfield Central’s Jeff Lewis, a University of Wisconsin recruit, rushed for 94 yards and Madison East’s Drew McAdams had 136 combined passing and rushing yards to lead the South.

Merrill’s Pascal Paul threw a 9-yard touchdown pass to Shane Rockweiler of Reedsburg to help the North build a 14-0 lead at halftime.

Lewis had a 76-yard touchdown run and McAdams threw a 19-yard scoring strike to Brookfield Central and future Badgers teammate Marquis Mason to tie the game for the South.

Green Bay Notre Dame’s David Ihlenfeldt scored on a 6-yard run and Sweeney converted the two-point conversion to give the North an eight-point lead in the overtime. The South responded with a 15-yard touchdown run by Menomonee Falls’ Cole Myhra, but the two-point conversion pass failed to end the game.

In the Division 4-7 Small School game, Spindler played defensive line for the North team, which lost 28-6.

The South converted three interceptions into touchdowns to cruise to the win.

Burlington Catholic Central quarterback Brian Fliess threw for a touchdown and ran for another, and Big Foot running back Mike Walker added a pair of rushing touchdowns for the South. Fliess led all rushers with 74 yards on 13 carries.

Chippewa Falls McDonell Central quarterback Andy Davis threw a 46-yard touchdown pass to Altoona’s Zach Honadel to account for the North’s lone score.

The games will be televised on FSN and FSN-HD on Saturday. The Division 1-3 game will air at noon, with the Division 4-7 game to follow at 2:30 p.m.

Marshfield Tennis Association holds annual tournament

MARSHFIELD – The Marshfield Tennis Association hosted the Marshfield Tennis Tournament at the JD Boson courts on Saturday and Sunday.

Thirty-five participants ranging in age from 13 to 61 took the courts for singles and doubles competitions.

Seven women and 21 men took part in singles competition, and four women’s doubles teams and seven men’s double teams also participated.

Holly Reckner defeated Ali Luedtke 6-1, 6-3 to win the women’s singles title. Elizabeth Manlick beat MaryLynn Kretchmar 6-4, 6-0 for the consolation bracket title. Reckner and Renee Wesolowski won the women’s double title with a 3-0 record in round-robin play.

Two recent Marshfield High School graduates battled for the men’s A singles title as Nick Ackerman beat John Coleman 6-1, 2-6, 6-3 in the championship match. Ryan Coleman beat Dave Droste 6-1, 7-6 (7-4) in the third-place match and Kurt Hendrickson defeated Chris Gritzmacher 7-6, 2-6, 6-4, in the consolation bracket final.

In the men’s B singles round robin, Duane Pupp went 3-0 to win the title.

Ryan Coleman and John Coleman beat Grant Reckner and Kurt Hendrickson 7-6 (7-3), 7-6 (7-3) in the men’s doubles championship.

Shanon Denzine and Zhan Ye defeated Duane Myklejord Sr. and Duane Myklejord Jr. 5-7, 6-3, 6-2 in the doubles consolation bracket final.

The Marshfield Doubles Tournament will be held Aug. 7-8.

Andie Varsho wins award

Marshfield's Andie Varsho was named the top three-sport female athlete in the state by

Wisconsin Sports Network and has selected Andie Varsho of Marshfield High School as the inaugural recipient of the Pat Richter Award as the Triple Play Triple Threat Female Athlete of the Year.

The Triple Play Triple Threat of the Week is an honor given on to the top senior boys and girls three-sport athletes in the state.

At the end of the school year, those awarded with the weekly honor were eligible for the Pat Richter Award.

Varsho, a four-time Wisconsin Valley Conference batting champion and Wisconsin Fastpitch Softball Coaches Association first-team all-state selection, earned 11 letters during her career at Marshfield.

She was a three-time WIAA state tournament participant in tennis and a led the girls basketball team to three straight WVC championships and WIAA state tournament appearances in 2008 and 2009 as the starting point guard.

Varsho will be playing softball at Purdue University starting in the fall.

Football P.A. announcers’ clinic scheduled

SUN PRAIRIE – Sports public address announcers and those who want to learn more about announcing can attend a clinic at Sun Prairie High School on Saturday, Aug. 14 from 9 a.m. to noon.

Host clinician will be Mike Mahnke, P.A. announcer for the University of Wisconsin. The event is sponsored by The National Association of Sports Public Address Announcers (NASPAA), the professional association for sports public address announcers.

The clinic is for P.A. announcers who announce junior high/middle school, high school, college, and youth football. Substitute announcers, as well as high school and college students, who would like to learn how to announce or who are announcing, are encouraged to register.

The clinic will address the announcer’s role, P.A. announcing expectations, “do’s and don’ts” of announcing football, how to handle emergency situations, as well as scriptwriting and working with a spotter. Attendees will have the opportunity to participate in voice training and announcing exercises. A football official will review new rules changes, officials’ hand signals and ways that officials and P.A. announcers can better work together.
