Marshfield Chaparrals knock off Plover, 6-1

MARSHFIELD – Four Marshfield Chaparrals pitchers combined to allow just one run and led the team to a 6-1 win over the Plover Pterodactyls in amateur baseball action Wednesday night at Jack Hackman Field.

Lucious Messerschmidt gave up one run in six innings and three relievers followed with shutout innings to lift Marshfield (15-9) to the victory.

Marshfield used a five-run third inning to forge ahead. Cain Trunkel led the Chaps’ offense by going 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored. Justin Rayburn had two hits and two RBIs and Dylan McHugh had a pair of singles and two runs scored for Marshfield.

Marshfield hosts Menomonie on Friday in its final home game of the season. The Chaparrals wrap up their 2011 schedule at Plover next Wednesday.

Six champions crowned at Marshfield Open Tennis Tournament

MARSHFIELD – The Marshfield Tennis Association hosted the Marshfield Open Tennis Tournament on Saturday and Sunday at J.D. Boson Courts.

Men’s, Women’s and Co-ed preliminary rounds were held Saturday morning. After a two-hour delay due to rain, play resumed until rain ended play early Saturday evening. The remainder of the quarterfinal matches, along with semifinal and championship matches took place on Sunday.

Overall, there were 44 participants in six divisions.

Singles champions were awarded trophies and free entry into next year’s tournament. Doubles champs were awarded with the new MTA water and free entry into next year’s tournament.

20th annual Predictor Mile held Wednesday

MARSHFIELD – The 20th annual Predictor Mile was held at the Marshfield Middle School on Wednesday.

Steve Frericks was the winner, finishing just 0.95 seconds off of his predicted time.

Adam Steinke won the race with a time of 4:51.07, with Frericks second at 4:58.0 and David Worley third at 5:21.87.

Scott Hansen was second in the predictor mile contest (2.49 seconds of his predicted time), with Ben Frericks third (2.59), Dan Akin fourth (2.61) and Nikki Lang fifth (2.8).

Marshfield Chaparrals edge Hortonville, fall to Appleton

The Marshfield Chaparrals baseball team beat Hortonville 9-8 on Friday before dropping a 10-0 decision to the Appleton Legends on Saturday.

In the win on Friday, the Chaps scored a pair of runs in the eighth inning to overcome an 8-7 deficit and pull out the victory.

Dylan McHugh, Justin Moroder, Justin Rayburn and Chuck Brehm each had two hits for Marshfield in the victory. McHugh had a pair of RBIs.

Kyle Krohn gave up two runs in the seventh but earned the victory. Eric Pritzl tossed a pair of shutout innings to gain the save.

Marshfield was ousted from the NBC Tournament in Menasha on Saturday by Appleton.

The tournament was continued from last weekend.

Cain Trunkel was roughed up for the Chaparrals, giving up 10 runs, nine earned, 10 hits and seven walks in 4 2/3 innings. The game was called due to the 10-run rule when Appleton scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth innings.

Moroder had Marshfield’s only hit in the game.

Marshfield hosts its final two games of the season this week. The Chaparrals play Plover on Wednesday and Menomonie on Friday. Both games are at Jack Hackman Field and start at 7:30 p.m.

Eau Claire Cavaliers pounce on Marshfield Chaparrals 11-1

MARSHFIELD – The Marshfield Chaparrals baseball team was roughed up by the Eau Claire Cavaliers on Wednesday night, dropping an 11-1 decision at Jack Hackman Field.

A four-run sixth inning by the Cavaliers (25-12) gave them a 7-0 lead and knocked out Marshfield pitcher Lucious Messerschmidt.

Marshfield scored its only run in the bottom of the sixth on an RBI double by Chuck Brehm. Eau Claire pitcher Jake Peterson was dominant, striking out 11 and scattering five hits in six innings.

Nolan Fadness, Mike Darley and John Ewald each had two RBIs for Eau Claire.

Marshfield (13-8) is back in action Friday at Hortonville and the Chaps host Chaseburg/Coon Valley for a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. Saturday at Hackman Field.

MENASHA – The Marshfield Chaparrals won their second straight game, beating the Chaseburg/Coon Valley Blues 3-1 in the first game of the NBC Tournament at Koslo Park in Menasha on Saturday.

Cain Trunkel allowed five hits and one walk, while striking out seven in a seven-inning complete-game victory for the Chaparrals (13-7).

Dylan McHugh had a two-RBI single in the sixth to provide Marshfield with the winning runs.

Marshfield will continue play at the tournament today.

Hub City Days Fun Run/Walk set for July 30

MARSHFIELD – The Hub City Days Two-Mile Fun Run/Walk will be held Saturday, July 30, at the Old Armory Building on Oak Street in Marshfield.

Registration will be held beginning at 8 a.m. the day of the run/walk, with the event starting at 9 a.m. The entry fee is $3.

Ribbons will be awarded to all finishers, with winners in male and female divisions receiving medals.

ABBOTSFORD – Chuck Brehm and Casey Krohn each had three hits and four RBIs to lead the Marshfield Chaparrals baseball team to a 12-6 win over the Abbotsford Merchants on Thursday night at Red Arrow Park.

Brehm had a single, a double and a home run to lead the Chaparrals’ offensive onslaught. Marshfield pounded out 21 hits in the victory as it stopped a three-game losing streak.

Marshfield scored in each of the first four innings. A five-run fourth gave the Chaps (12-7) a 9-0 lead.

Lucious Messerschmidt earned the win, giving up three runs and seven hits in five innings.

Justin Rayburn and Eric Pritzl each added three hits for Marshfield, which plays in a tournament at Menasha on Friday and Saturday.

Everest Merchants rally to top Marshfield Chaparrals

MARSHFIELD – A four-run eighth inning lifted the Everest Merchants to a 5-4 win over the Marshfield Chaparrals baseball team Wednesday night at Jack Hackman Field.

Marshfield led 4-0 through five innings after scoring a pair of runs in the first and fifth innings.

Everest scored a single run in the sixth against Marshfield starting pitcher Jake Long, then teed off against the Chaps’ reliever Mason Nesbitt in the eighth, scoring four times (three earned) one just one hit.

Joe Waksmonski pitched four hitless innings to earn the win and slammed the door in the eighth and ninth for the Merchants (9-6).

Marshfield lost its third straight game and falls to 11-7 on the season.

Chuck Brehm led the Chaparrals offense by going 3-for-4 with an RBI.

Marshfield is back in action Thursday at Abbotsford and will play in a tournament at Menasha on Friday and Saturday.

WAUPACA – Waupaca scored a run in the bottom of seventh inning to knock off the Marshfield Chaparrals baseball team 2-1 on Friday night.

Justin Rayburn had an RBI in the third inning that tied the game for Marshfield at 1-1 in the third inning.

The game remained scoreless until Waupaca won it in the seventh.

The Chaparrals (11-6) have a busy week ahead. They host Everest on Wednesday, play at Abbotsford on Thursday and will take part in a tournament at Menasha on Friday and Saturday.
