Marshfield Chaparrals crush Plover to improve to 12-5

PLOVER – The Marshfield Chaparrals scored multiple runs in four different innings and made quick work of the Plover Pterodactyls, rolling to a 12-1 victory in seven innings Friday night at Memorial Field.

Ryan Williams went 3-for-4 with a double, two RBIs and two runs scored, and Chuck Brehm added a pair of doubles and four RBIs for the Chaparrals, who improve to 12-5 with the win.

Jake Long, Gunnar Smith and Kenny Chiu combined to strike out nine and allow just one unearned run for Marshfield.

Josh Barnes added two hits and three RBIs, and Dylan McHugh and John Safford each scored twice for Marshfield.

The Chaparrals are off until July 11 when they host Eau Claire.

Marshfield Chaparrals improve to 11-5 with another win over Wausau Riverhawks

MARSHFIELD – Brad Stroik struck out nine in eight innings and Kyle McHugh drove in three runs to lead the Marshfield Chaparrals baseball team to a 6-1 win over the Wausau Riverhawks on Wednesday night at Jack Hackman Field.

The Chaparrals improve to 11-5 this season after beating Wausau for the second time this week.

Stroik did not walk a batter and allowed just five hits and one unearned run in eight innings to earn the win for Marshfield. Cain Trunkel pitched a scoreless ninth inning.

Eric Pritzl had two hits and Sam Arnott had a double and scored for the Chaps.

Marshfield returns to action with a road game at Plover on Friday, then is off until July 11 when it hosts Eau Claire.

Spencer Youth Recreations Golf Scramble scheduled for July 28

SPENCER – The 8th Annual Spencer Youth Recreations Golf Scramble will be held Saturday, July 28, at RiverEdge Golf Course in Marshfield.

All proceeds from SYR events are used to improve athletic facilities, purchase equipment and to help fund community projects to enrich the lives of the youth of Spencer.

The four-person scramble begins with a shotgun start at 11 a.m.

The entry fee is $65 per person, which includes 18 holes of golf, including cart, dinner after golf and flag events. A cash payout for the top finishers in each flight will be awarded. The deadline to sign-up a team is July 25.

Marshfield Chaparrals blast Wausau Riverhawks

WAUSAU – Jake Long struck out eight in five innings and Sam Arnott had three hits and scored three times to lead the Marshfield Chaparrals to a 9-4 win over the Wausau Riverhawks in amateur baseball action Saturday afternoon at Wausau West High School.

The Chaparrals (10-4) scored twice in the first inning, four more times in the third and added three runs in the fourth to open up a 9-0 lead before Wausau got on the board with three in the bottom of the fifth.

Long gave up three unearned runs and six hits, and didn’t walk a batter in five innings. Gunnar Smith tossed three innings of relief and Kenny Chiu allowed a run in the ninth.

Ryan Williams had three RBIs and Eric Pritzl added a hit, two RBIs and a run scored for the Chaparrals.

Marshfield hosts Wausau on Wednesday.

STEVENS POINT – Spencer seniors Danica Johnson and Krystal Weier played in the Wisconsin Fastpitch Softball Coaches Association Senior All-Star Series on June 19 at Zenoff Park.

Johnson, a left fielder, and Weier, a catcher, were members of the Division 4 Red Team.

Weier, an honorable mention all-state selection by the WFSCA, hit .517 with eight home runs, 51 RBIs, 50 runs scored and she only struck out three times in 28 games.

Johnson, the Rockets’ leadoff hitter, batted .476 with 56 runs scored, 17 RBIs and 10 walks.

A total of 153 seniors were named to 13 different teams (Division 1 had four teams, Divisions 2-4 had three teams each).

Players were nominated for the game by their head coach and selected by the WFSCA.

Four area basketball stars play in WBCA State All-Star games in Wisconsin Dells

WISCONSIN DELLS – A number of area high school seniors competed in the annual Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Association state all-star games on June 17-18 at JustAGame Fieldhouse in Wisconsin Dells.

Marshfield’s Taylor Varsho competed in the Division 1 girls game, while the Tigers’ Elliot Ashbeck played in the Division 1 boys game, and Stratford’s Derek Austin and Auburndale’s Markus Kleifgen participated in the Division 4 boys game.

This was the first year the games were held in Wisconsin Dells and the players were treated to the Tommy Bartlett Water Show, a lunch boat ride, activities at the Great Wolf Lodge and Buffalo Phil’s, and a banquet at the Kalahari Resort.

Varsho, a Colorado State recruit who leaves Marshfield as the program’s all-time leading scorer, had five 3-pointers and a game-high 19 points for the North team in a 65-59 loss.

Ashbeck was 4-for-5 from the field and scored 10 points – one of eight North players in double figures – to help the North to a 98-64 victory over the South.

Kleifgen finished second on the North team with 10 points and nine rebounds, and Austin scored six points and five rebounds, but the South team prevailed 82-64.

Eau Claire edges Marshfield Chaparrals in pitcher’s duel

EAU CLAIRE – The Eau Claire Cavaliers scored a run in the bottom of the ninth inning to edge the Marshfield Chaparrals 1-0 in baseball action Monday night at Carson Park.

Brad Stroik was the tough-luck loser for Marshfield, allowing just six hits and one walk, while striking out 11.

Brett Vavra drove in Mike Darley with the game’s lone run in the ninth for Eau Claire.

Marshfield was held to three hits by three different Cavs’ pitchers. Josh Barnes, Brad Grube and Dylan McHugh had singles for the Chaparrals, who fall to 9-5 with the loss.

Marshfield hosts Abbotsford at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at Jack Hackman Field.

Marshfield Tiger Booster Club Golf Outing set for July 7

MARSHFIELD – The Tiger Booster Club Golf Outing will be held Saturday, July 7, at RiverEdge Golf Course.

The cost is $50 per player ($30 for RiverEdge members), with all proceeds benefitting the Marshfield High School Tiger Booster Club.

A four-person scramble format will be held with cash prizes awarded to top teams in each flight, hole prizes awarded, and a burger and brat buffet following golf.

Champions crowned at 2012 Marshfield Doubles Tournament

MARSHFIELD – The Marshfield Tennis Association hosted its annual Marshfield Doubles Tournament at the J.D. Boson Courts on June 9-10.

A total of 26 doubles teams comprised of 38 athletes competed in five divisions at the two team tournament.

Winners in each men’s and women’s division were awarded gold key chains and free entry into next year’s Men’s/Women’s bracket. Winners in mixed divisions were awarded T-shirts and free entry into next year’s Mixed bracket.

Marshfield sophomores Autumn Slowiak and Katie Treankler earned postseason honors as the 2012 All-Wisconsin Valley Conference Softball Team was announced.

Slowiak, an outfielder, was a second-team all-WVC selection, while Treankler, an infielder, was an honorable mention selection.

Slowiak hit .342 with seven runs scored, while Treankler led Marshfield with a .394 batting average and tied for the team lead with six RBIs.

Conference champion Stevens Point had five first-team picks, D.C. Everest had four and Wisconsin Rapids the other two. Only two of the 11 first-team selections were seniors.

Stevens Point’s Heather Woyak was named WVC player of the year, while her coach, Tom Drohner, was selected as coach of the year.

Woyak, a junior outfielder, hit .611 (22-for-36) with a conference-best seven home runs, 28 RBIs, 25 runs scored and 10 walks.
