Marshfield Chaparrals rip Waupaca for eighth straight win

WAUPACA – The streak continues for the Marshfield Chaparrals.

Marshfield came back from a 3-0 deficit to knock off the Waupaca Lakemen 10-4 in amateur baseball action Friday night at Athletic Field.

The win is the Chaparrals’ eighth straight and moves their record to 17-5 on the season.

Waupaca led 3-0 after three innings before Marshfield exploded for four runs in the fourth, two more in the fifth and four in the sixth to grab the victory.

Kyle McHugh had a two-run home run and drove in four in the game, and Josh Barnes, Bobby Gregorich and Chuck Brehm each had a hit and scored twice for Marshfield.

Jake Long earned the win, going sixth innings and striking out six.

Marshfield wraps up its season next week with a road game at Everest on Wednesday and its final home game of the season on Aug. 3 against Taylor County.

Marshfield Chaparrals win seventh straight, take down Plover in extra innings

PLOVER – The Marshfield Chaparrals baseball team extended its winning streak to seven games with an 8-7 victory over the Plover Pterodactyls in 10 innings Wednesday night at Memorial Field.

The Chaps used a six-run fifth inning to take a 6-1 lead, but saw Plover rally and tie the game with a run in the bottom of the ninth.

Marshfield quickly regained the lead with a run in the top of the 10th inning as Sam Arnott reached base and stole second, third and home. Gunnar Smith shut the door in the bottom of the frame to protect his victory.

John Safford had a single, a double and three RBIs, Dylan McHugh added two hits and Chuck Brehm had a double, an RBI and scored twice for Marshfield.

Marshfield (16-5) plays at Waupaca on Friday.

2012 Hub City Days Run/Walk set for July 27 in Marshfield

MARSHFIELD – The 2012 Hub City Days Two-Mile Run/Walk will be held Friday, July 27, at Jack Hackman Field in Marshfield.

The course is around the park area and will not cross any city streets.

Refreshments will be provided at the end of the run and awards will be given to all finishers.

The entry fee is $5 per person and all students must have a parent signature at registration.

Registration begins at 6:15 p.m. and the run/walk starts at 7 p.m.

Chaparrals top Menomonie with two late runs to win sixth straight

MARSHFIELD – The Marshfield Chaparrals scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to edge Menomonie 4-3 in amateur baseball action Friday night at Jack Hackman Field in Marshfield.

The Chaparrals improve to 15-5 after winning their sixth game in a row.

Jake Long earned the win with three scoreless innings of relief. Starter Brad Stroik held the Eagles scoreless until allowing three runs in the sixth inning as Menomonie took a 3-2 lead. He finished with eight strikeouts.

Josh Barnes had two of Marshfield’s five hits, including a double and an RBI, and he scored once. Chuck Brehm and Eric Pritzl also drove in runs for the Chaparrals.

Marshfield returns to action Wednesday at Plover. The Chaparrals have only one home game remaining – the final game of the season on Aug. 3 against Taylor County.

ABBOTSFORD – The Marshfield Chaparrals pounded out 21 hits and ripped the Abbotsford Merchants 18-1 in an amateur baseball game Thursday at Red Arrow Field.

Marshfield scored five times in the first innigns, four more in the second and two in the third to take a commanding 11-0 lead after three innings.

Eric Pritzl and Dylan McHugh each had three hits and three RBIs, Chuck Brehm had two doubles, a single and scored four times, and Bobby Gregorich added a triple, a single and three RBIs for the Chaps (14-5).

Ryan Williams pitched four shutout innings to earn the win for Marshfield.

Marshfield returns to action Friday at home against Menomonie.

Marshfield Chaparrals return to action with narrow win over Eau Claire Cavaliers

MARSHFIELD – After a two-week layoff, the Marshfield Chaparrals baseball team returned to action Wednesday and held off the Eau Claire Cavaliers 8-7 at Jack Hackman Field.

Marshfield led 7-3 after three innings, posting three runs in both the second and third innings. Eau Claire chipped away and scored twice in the ninth but couldn’t get the tying run across against Jake Long, who earned the save with four innings of relief.

Brad Stroik struck out three and gave up five runs in the five innings to grab the victory for the Chaparrals, who improve to 13-5 on the season.

Kyle McHugh had three hits and two RBIs, Dylan McHugh had a pair of hits and scored twice, and John Safford and Josh Barnes each knocked in a run for the Chaparrals.

Marshfield has another week off before hosting Plover on July 18.

Marshfield Youth Summer Fun Runs continue July 18

MARSHFIELD – The Summer Youth Fun Run Series continues Wednesday, July 18, at 6:30 p.m. at the Old Armory on Oak Avenue in Marshfield.

The kids run will be 1/2 mile and will stay in the park area around Jack Hackman Field area.

Registration will take place at 6:15 p.m. All children are welcome to attend with all finishers receiving an award.

The high school/middle school Fun Runs will begin at 7 p.m. each Wednesday Night at the Old Armory.

The Fun Runs will take place every Wednesday night through the middle of August.

All area athletes are encouraged to attend.

Spencer’s Weier, Dani Johnson, Paige Johnson named to first team of 2012 Cloverbelt East all-conference softball team

Spencer had a conference-high three players selected to the 2012 Cloverbelt East Division all-conference softball team, as voted on by the conference’s coaches.

Senior catcher Krystal Weier, senior outfielder Dani Johnson and junior shortstop Paige Johnson were chosen to the first team after helping Spencer to a 22-6 overall record and second place in the conference with a 12-4 mark. The Rockets advanced to the Division 4 sectional finals before losing in extra innings to Tigerton.

Overall, Weier batted .517 with eight home runs, 51 RBIs and 50 runs scored in 28 games for the Rockets.

Dani Johnson, the Rockets’ leadoff hitter, batted .476 with 17 RBIs and 56 runs scored. Paige Johnson smacked six home runs, had 37 RBIs, 45 runs scored, 13 doubles and batted an even .500.

Spencer freshman Brooke Kettleborough, who hit .390 with 27 RBIs, was a second-team selection for Spencer, while senior first baseman Courtney Schulz was an honorable mention choice.

No Marshfield Columbus Catholic players earned all-conference recognition.

Two Spencer underclassmen were among the 10 players selected to the first team of the 2012 Cloverbelt East Division all-conference baseball team, as voted on by the conference coaches.

Sophomore Alex Brostowitz and freshman Mitchell Susa were picked to the first team all-Cloverbelt East squad after helping Spencer to an 11-11 overall record and an 11-7 mark in the conference, which was good enough for third place.

Both Marshfield Columbus Catholic and Spencer had one player selected to the second team and one more as honorable mention.

Columbus senior Mike Iwanski and Spencer senior Jordan Buss were second-team picks, while Columbus senior Pat Sullivan and Spencer senior Tanner Hoffman were honorable mention choices.

Greenwood, which won the conference title with a perfect 18-0 record, had four first-team selections, including player of the year Hayden Hinker.
