Stratford STAR men’s basketball league wraps up season with playoffs

STRATFORD – The Stratford STAR men’s basketball league wrapped up its 2012-13 season with playoffs in two divisions.

In Division B, Resource Recovery defeated Arby’s 72-69 and USBancorp edged Victory Apparel 57-54 in the semifinals.

Barry Messman and Scott Gebelein each had 21 points for Resource Recovery. Chris Newbury led USBancorp with 28 points and Josh Hennes had 20 for Victory Apparel.

USBancorp went on to beat Resource Recovery 81-79 in the Division B championship game. Newburry had 28 points for USBancorp.

In Division A, Kizzy & Sue’s Bar & Grill knocked off Smazel’s Hunters Choice 78-71, and Lindsey Bar & Grill beat Marawood Construction 76-71 in the semifinals.

Dan Linzmeier had 29 points for Kizzy & Sue’s, while Jeremy Rahm led Smazel’s with 23.

In the championship game, Kizzy & Sue’s defeated Lindsey Bar 71-59. Linzmeier had 23 points for Kizzy & Sue’s.

Four Marshfield youth wrestlers medal at state folkstyle tournament in Madison

MADISON – Four athletes from the Marshfield Youth Wrestling program earned medals at the 2013 Wisconsin Wrestling Federation Kids Folkstyle State Tournament on March 22-23 at Alliant Energy Center in Madison.

Joey Carolfi took second place, Hoyt Blaskowski and Bentley Schwanebeck each finished fourth, and Brock Bennington finished fifth for Marshfield.

A total of 13 Marshfield wrestlers competed in the tournament.

MARSHFIELD – The Marshfield Tiger Hoops Club eighth grade boys basketball team completed its season with a sixth-place finish at the Division 1 Wisconsin State Invitational Championship Tournament last weekend in Marshfield.

In round-robin action, Marshfield defeated West Allis Central 60-48, Brookfield Central 43-42 and Kimberly 41-40 to advance to the Round of 16.

Hunter Schultz scored 28 points and was 8 of 10 from the free throw line in the fourth quarter of the win over West Allis Central. Alec Hinson added 14 points, including three 3-pointers. Overall, Marshfield made nine 3-pointers.

Grant Michaelis hit the go-ahead free throw with 32 seconds left to lift Marshfield past Brookfield Central. Derek Michalski had 14 points, including 11 in the fourth quarter, and Schultz added 12.

In another close win over Kimberly, Jared Klein made a layup with 45 seconds to go to push Marshfield ahead. Hinson drained another three 3-pointers and finished with a team-high 17 points. Schultz chipped in 10.

In the Round of 16, Marshfield edged Hartland Arrowhead 42-40 in overtime.

Marshfield trailed 26-19 at halftime before rallying to force overtime on a basket by Klein with 25 seconds left in regulation. Hinson scored go-ahead basket with 30 seconds left in OT. Hinson had 14 points and Schultz 11 in the win.

Marshfield then dropped a 51-44 decision to Middleton in the quarterfinals, and lost the fifth-place game to Madison Memorial 62-53.

Klein scored 13 points, Hinson 12 and Michaelis 11 in the loss to Middleton.

Against Memorial, Hinson had four 3-pointers and scored 16 points, and Michalski had three 3-pointers and 15 points for Marshfield.

Middleton went on to take third place, beating Kettle Moraine 49-33. Janesville Craig won the tournament championship with a 48-47 victory over Madison East.

Marshfield edges Stratford for team title at 2013 Marshfield Tiger Girls Indoor Track Relays

MARSHFIELD – The Marshfield Black team won eight events to edge Stratford by 10 points to win the team title at the 2013 Marshfield Tiger Girls Indoor Track Relays on Tuesday at Marshfield High School.

Marshfield won the 4×50-yard relay (41.36 seconds), 4×100 (1:23.68), 4×100 throwers relay (1:35.60), 4×200 (3:09.42) and 800 sprint medley (2:46.53). Kate Schumitsch, Maria Brix and Gabby Stauber teamed to win the pole vault relay, and Martha Kupfer won the triple jump (31-10) for the Tigers.

Marshfield’s winning shot put team was comprised of Yasmeena Ouygayour, Chelsea Akin and Miranda Forrest; the triple jump team that took first was made up of Martha Kupfer, Ellie Fehrenbach and Mikayla Sebastian; Olivia Tierney, Susan Omoba, Ashleigh Sternitzky and Nikki Youngblood won the 4×50 and 4×100; Sara Fuller, Gabby Stauber, Nikki Youngblood and Sternitzky took first in the 4×200; Omoba, Ellie Kummer, Kupfer and Fuller were first in the sprint medley; and
the 4×100 throwers relay team was made up of Forrest, Brix, Akin and Ouygayour.

Stratford’s lone win came from Abby Bender in the high jump (4-10), while Auburndale’s Silviann Moumant won the long jump (16-1). Stratford also took second in six events.

MARSHFIELD – Marshfield won four events and used its overall depth to grab the team championship at the 2013 Tiger Girls Indoor Track Invitational on Thursday at the Marshfield High School Fieldhouse.

Martha Kupfer won the 220-yard dash in 27.91 seconds, Susan Omoba took the high jump with a leap of 4-10, Melissa May took first in the shot put (35-8½) for Marshfield. The Tigers also won the 4×320 relay on their way to 101. 5 team points, 18.5 ahead of second-place Marathon. The relay team was made up of Gabby Stauber, Sara Fuller, Ashley Holubets and Ashleigh Sternitzky.

Auburndale was seventh with 45 points and Spencer finished 10th with 31.5 points.

Spencer’s Rachel Zastrow won a pair of events, taking the 60 hurdles in 9.38 seconds, and the pole vault (9-6).

Auburndale’s Emma Steines won the triple jump for the Apaches with a leap of 35-5.

Marshfield dominates 2013 Tiger Boys Indoor Track Invitational

MARSHFIELD – Marshfield won 10 of the 15 events to roll to the team title at the 2013 Tiger Boys Indoor Track Invitational on Tuesday at the Marshfield High School Fieldhouse.

Keiron Howlett won the 60 hurdles (7.92 seconds) and the long jump (21 feet, 4.25 inches), and tied for second in the 60 meters (6.72) to lead the charge for Marshfield.

Brad Krueger also won a pair of events, taking first in the pole vault (12-0) and the triple jump (38-10) for Marshfield.

Stratford finished seventh and got a first-place finish from Jacob Zuelke in the 880 meters (2:15.99).

Auburndale ended up eighth and Spencer was 11th in the team standings.

Marshfield graduate Elliot Ashbeck begins freshman season on Bradley University baseball team

PEORIA, Ill. – Elliot Ashbeck, a 2012 graduate of Marshfield High School, has begun his freshman season as a member of the Bradley University baseball team.

Ashbeck had appeared in six games out of the bullpen for the Braves, tossing 10 1/3 innings. He has a 3.48 earned run average, allowing five runs (four earned), while striking out eight and walking six and giving up an opponents’ batting average against of .220.

Ashbeck struck out in his only at-bat this season.

Bradley is off to an 8-9 start following two trips to Nashville, Tenn., and others to Arkansas State, Las Vegas and Dayton.

Last weekend, Bradley swept three games in Nashville, beating Lipscomb twice and Belmont. Ashbeck pitched a shutout inning to close out the Braves’ 7-0 win over Lipscomb on March 15.

Bradley travels to Florida this week and starts a four-game trip with a game against Washington & Jefferson College in Auburndale, Fla., on Wednesday. The Braves then play a three-game series against Dartmouth from Thursday through Saturday.

2013 Stratford STAR Men’s Basketball League playoffs begin with seven first-round games

STRATFORD – The 2013 Stratford STAR Men’s Basketball League playoffs started Sunday, March 17, with seven games.

Resource Recovery received a first-round bye. In action on the courts Sunday:

*Marawood Construction knocked off A&B Processing 80-70. Kevin Spindler led Marawood with 20 points, while Andy Bliven had 22 and Kyle Davis 20 for A&B.

*Aaron Linzmeier had 39 points, Derek Novotny scored 31 and Matt Klawitter had 28 in Kizzy & Sue’s Bar & Grill’s 131-68 rout of Southway Pub.

*Jimmy Flink scored 32 points and Brian Bartnik added 24 as Smazel’s Hunters Choice beat Down Under Bar & Grill 86-73. Chris Kalk had 21 for Down Under.

*Lindsey Bar & Grill whipped After Hours 122-89. Brant Serchen had 33 points, Dan Dargenio scored 28 and Lee Follen chipped in with 20 for Lindsey. Ryan Jakobi had 25 in the loss for After Hours.

*Victory Apparel poured in a league-high 147 points in a 147-51 whipping of Country Wireless. Bill Beyeck had a whopping 67 points in the win for Victory Apparel. Conner Staab added 22 for the winners.

*Arby’s toppled Kakfa Granite 119-81. Jeremy Bulgrin scored 32 points, Chad Sternitzky had 27 and Justin Schmoll scored 21 for Arby’s. Ryan Schalow topped Kakfa with 45 points.

*USBancorp beat The Shack 88-60 behind 20 points from Malachi David. Marshal Lehman scored 21 for The Shack.

Stratford girls second, boys fourth at Tomahawk Indoor Track Invitational at UW-Eau Claire

EAU CLAIRE – The Stratford girls won three events and finished second at the 2013 Tomahawk Indoor Track Invitational on Friday at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire.

Nadia King won the 1,600 meters in a flat 6 minutes; Johnelle Miner won the 800 in 2:43.63; and the Tigers’ 1,600 relay team also won in 4:36.86 as Stratford finished with 85.75 points. Tomahawk won the girls team title with 127.5 points.

Stratford had five other top-four finishes, including a pair from Brooke Schultze and Abby Bender. Schultze took second in the high jump (4-10) and fourth in the 55 meters (8.03 seconds). Bender was second in the 200 (29.25) and third in the high jump (4-10). Lexi Schneider had Stratford’s other top-four finish, taking third in the shot put (31-0).

The Stratford boys had a pair of titles and six top-four finishes in all to take fourth in the team standings with 72 points. Medford (115.5) edged Black River Falls (114.5) for the boys team title.

The Tigers 800 relay team won in 1:43.93 and Eli Temanson took first in the 200 (24.22) for Stratford.

Temanson also was second in the high jump (19-6), as was Jacob Zuelke in the 1,600 (4:54.59).

Also earning high finishes for Stratford was the 1,600 relay team (third in 3:55.84) and Mark Wenzel (fourth in the 3,200, 12:07.11).

The Stratford boys will compete in the Marshfield Indoor Invitational on Tuesday, and both the boys and girls teams return to action at the Cashton Indoor Invite at UW-La Crosse on March 23.

Howlett leads Marshfield to fifth place at 2013 Point Boys Track Invitational

STEVENS POINT – Keiron Howelett won the long jump and had two other finishes in the top five to lift the Marshfield boys track and field team to a fifth-place finish at the 2013 Point Boys Track Invitational on Saturday at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point.

Howlett won the long jump with a leap of 22-3, finished fourth in the triple jump (41-6) and was fifth in the 55-meter hurdles (8.09 seconds) for the Tigers, who finished fifth in the team standings with 45 points.

Appleton North won the team title with 89.5 points, with second-place Kimberly finishing with 56 points.

Marshfield had six other top-eight finishes on the day, led by Jacob Bauer, who took second in the high jump (6-4).

Brad Krueger tied for fourth in the pole vault (11-6), Nolan Redetzke was fourth in the 3,200 meters (10:21.16), the 800 relay team was fourth (1:36.63), Ryan Treierweiler took sixth in the long jump (20-2.5) and Derek Coffren finished eighth in the 400 (54.00).

Marshfield hosts its annual Tigers Boys Track Indoor Invitational on Tuesday at the Marshfield High School Fieldhouse.
