Marshfield loses to Plover in Class AAA regional championship game

PLOVER – The Marshfield Legion baseball team came up one win short of a trip to the state tournament.

After winning two games in the loser’s bracket, the Blue Devils dropped a 17-7 decision to Plover in the Class AAA regional championship game Sunday at Memorial Field.

Luke Wirtz hit three home runs and accounted for all seven of Marshfield’s RBIs in the loss.

Marshfield led 6-4 in the fifth inning before the Black Sox rallied with 13 runs in the final five innings.

Marshfield defeated Stevens Point 10-0 on Wednesday in the opening game before losing Friday to Wausau 11-8.

The Blue Devils came back Saturday with a pair of wins, defeating Wisconsin Rapids 8-4 and Wausau 13-9.

Jack Donahue threw a complete game and Caleb Alexander smacked a home run in the win over Rapids.

Aaron Schwecke had a go-ahead, two-run double in the bottom of the eighth inning to propel Marshfield past Wausau.

Plover will compete in the Class AAA State Legion Tournament this week in Marinette.

Daulton Varsho and Schwecke were named to the all-Wisconsin Valley Legion League team for the season.

Marshfield finishes its season with a 22-12 record.

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – Marshfield High School graduate Sean Harrington is continuing his athletic career as a member of the University of California-Santa Barbara Triathlon Club.

Harrington, who was a decorated track and cross country runner during college at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse, is a graduate student at Santa Barbara and is studying Material Science Engineering.

Harrington won the 18-24 age division at the Racine Ironman 70.3 on July 21, qualifying him for the World Championships in Las Vegas on Sept. 8.

During the 2013 Triathlon season, Harrington finished 16th at the West Coast Collegiate Conference Meet at Cal Poly, and 59th at the National Collegiate Meet in Tempe, Ariz.

Most recently, on Saturday, Harrington won the Hub City Duathlon at the University of Wisconsin-Marshfield/Wood County.

MARSHFIELD – A total of 56 people finished the Hub City Days Two-Mile Run/Walk on Friday night at Jack Hackman Field.

Joel Egbert of Sparta was the male winner, finishing in 11:37. Alexis Free of Marshfield was the top female, running the course in 14:14.

Marshfield Chaparrals whip Wausau Riverhawks, 14-1

MARSHFIELD – Ryan Williams tossed six innings of four-hit, shutout baseball to lead the Marshfield Chaparrals to a 14-1 win over the Wausau Riverhawks on Wednesday at Jack Hackman Field.

Williams struck out five and walked just one to earn the win for the Chaparrals (10-4).

Marshfield scored four runs in the first and third innings, and five in the second to open up a 13-0 lead. The game ended via the 10-run rule after 6½ innings.

Kyle McHugh had a hit and four RBIs, Sam Schwanebeck had two doubles and three RBIs, and Bobby Gregorich had a single, a triple and two RBIs for Marshfield.

The Chaparrals had just eight hits, but took advantage of four errors and six walks by Wausau (9-4).

Marshfield is off until July 31 when it hosts Everest in its home finale at Hackman Field.

Marshfield Legion wins opener at Class AAA regional over Stevens Point

PLOVER – The Marshfield Legion baseball team won its opener at the Class AAA regional on Wednesday, routing Stevens Point 10-0.

Cale Cuddie pitched a seven-inning complete game, striking out seven and walking two.

Daulton Varsho was 3-for-4 with two RBIs and Joey Mundt added a double for Marshfield.

The Blue Devils will play a winner’s bracket game against Wausau at 7 p.m. Thursday at Plover.

The double-elimination tournament continues through Saturday, with a trip to next week’s state tournament in Marinette on the line.

48 people compete in annual Marshfield Predictor Mile

MARSHFIELD – A record turnout of 48 runners and walkers competed in the 22nd annual Marshfield Predictor Mile on Tuesday at Marshfield Middle School.

Steve Frericks was the winner of the traveling trophy, with his predicted time coming to within 0.02 seconds of his actual time.

Sarah Goetz was a close second, finishing less than one-half second from her predicted time.

The fastest time of the run was by Mitch Easker, who ran the mile in 4:49.

Marshfield Community Summer Volleyball Camp set for July 29-31

MARSHFIELD – The 2013 Marshfield Community Summer Volleyball Camp will be held for all area high school players on July 29-31 at Marshfield High School.

University of Wisconsin-River Falls coach Patti Ford will conduct the camp for girls entering grades 9 through 12. The camp is designed to introduce players to the sport and improve individual skills for setters, hitters, liberos, and will include game concepts, scrimmages and contests for all athletes.

The 9th and 10th grade camp will be held from 9 a.m. to noon, with 11th and 12th graders competing from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. over the three days.

Marshfield Junior Legion loses to Plover in regional championship

MARSHFIELD – The Marshfield Junior Legion baseball team’s season came to an end one win short of the state tournament after a hard-fought 1-0 loss to Plover in the regional championship game Saturday at Jack Hackman Field.

The Blue Demons finish the season with a 22-13-1 record.

After beating Stevens Point 5-3 in the opener Thursday, Marshfield lost to Plover 7-4 on Friday before coming back to beat Rothschild-Schofield-Weston 2-1 later that day.

On Saturday, Plover edged the Blue Demons 1-0.

Marshfield left 11 men on base in the loss to Plover on Friday. Mitch Susa pitched a complete game, suffering the loss.

Trevor Schwecke had a walk-off RBI single in the bottom of the seventh inning to lead Marshfield to the 2-1 win over RSW.

Sam Klein had the game-tying RBI with a single that scored Matt Meyer. Jeremy Brost scored the winning run on Schwecke’s single.

Jeremy Binder threw all seven innings, striking out eight to earn the victory for the Blue Demons.

Plover scored the championship game’s only run on a passed ball in the bottom of the sixth inning to edge Marshfield.

Schwecke threw a complete game for Marshfield, striking out eight in six innings. The Blue Demons left nine men on base.

MARSHFIELD – Jack Donahue tossed a complete game with six strikeouts to lead Marshfield to a 5-3 win over Stevens Point in the opening round of the Junior Legion Regional Baseball Tournament on Thursday at Jack Hackman Field.

Cameron Swanson went 1-for-2 with a double, a sacrifice fly and three RBIs, and Jeremy Brost, Matt Meyer, Mitch Susa, Trevor Schwecke, Donahue and Matt Kuhlka each had a hit for the Blue Demons (21-11-1).

In other action Thursday, Plover rolled Black River Falls 17-0 and shutout Rothschild-Schofield-Weston 12-0.

Stevens Point plays Black River Falls in a loser’s bracket game at 3 p.m. Friday, followed by Marshfield against Plover at 5:30 p.m. and RSW against the loser of the Marshfield-Plover game at 8 p.m.

EAU CLAIRE – Four Eau Claire pitchers scattered six hits and allowed just one run in a 5-1 win over the Marshfield Chaparrals in an amateur baseball game Thursday night at Carson Park.

Eau Claire scored single runs in the first, fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh innings against Marshfield starter Ryan Williams.

The Chaparrals (9-4) managed only one run in the seventh against Cavaliers reliever Yuji Nakajima, coming on an RBI triple by Bobby Gregorich.

Cale Tassi struck out seven and gave up two hits in five innings to earn the win for Eau Claire (27-9).

Marshfield is off until Wednesday when it hosts Waupaca at Jack Hackman Field.
