Marshfield Clinic Post 54 Blue Demons go 2-1 at La Crosse Tournament

LA CROSSE – The Marshfield Clinic Post 54 Blue Demons Junior American Legion baseball team went 2-1 at the La Crosse Jr. Legion Tournament to tie for first in its pool, but lost in the head-to-head tiebreaker and failed to advance to the tournament championship.

Marshfield lost to Union Grove 4-1 on Friday, and defeated La Crescent (Minn.) 12-5 and La Crosse Logan 11-2 on Saturday, improving to 8-8 overall this season.

Jake Brueggen threw a complete game, allowing only one earned run in the loss against Union Grove. Brenden Collins and Aaron Braun each had two hits for Marshfield.

Scott Berg struck out six in a complete-game effort to pick up the win against La Crescent. Jeremy Brost had a three-run triple, Matthis Gouin had an RBI double and Bobby Pilz had a single and a double for the Blue Demons.

Pilz earned the win against La Crosse, striking out five in five innings. Hunter Korger closed the game out with two scoreless innings of relief.

Braun and Collins each had two hits, and Connor Jasurda had a double for Marshfield.

The Blue Demons return to action Tuesday with a doubleheader against Eau Claire at Jack Hackman Field. The first game starts at 5:30 p.m.

Whittlesey routs Marshfield Chaparrals

MARSHFIELD – The Marshfield Chaparrals were held to three hits and dropped a 13-1 decision to the Whittlesey Reds in an amateur baseball game Friday night at Jack Hackman Field.

Whittlesey scored three runs in the third inning to take a 4-1 lead, then plated nine runs over the final two innings to pull away.

Dan Cypher walked seven but held the Chaparrals (7-6) to three hits in six innings to earn the victory for the Reds.

Ryan Metz suffered the loss for Marshfield, giving up eight runs (seven earned) and 10 hits in 5 1/3 innings.

The Chaparrals host Norwalk on Wednesday.

WISCONSIN RAPIDS – The Marshfield Clinic Post 54 American Legion Blue Devils improved to 8-5 this season with a 7-4 win over Wisconsin Rapids on Wednesday at Witter Field.

Drew Spaeth earned the win for the Blue Devils.

Mitch Susa, Logan Johnson, Jack Donahue and Nathan Dupee each had two hits for Marshfield.

Marshfield is back in action Thursday at home against Plover. The game begins at 7 p.m. at Jack Hackman Field.

Marshfield Chaparrals edge Rib Lake

MARSHFIELD – The Marshfield Chaparrals amateur baseball team handed the Rib Lake Osprey its first loss of the season, winning 3-2 on Wednesday at Jack Hackman Field.

Marshfield plated two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to take the lead for good.

Aaron Schwecke picked up the victory for the Chaparrals (7-5), allowing one earned run and eight hits in seven innings. Rayme Strey tossed two scoreless innings to earn the save.

Austin Littmann had two doubles and an RBI, Justin Rayburn had two singles, and Zac Iverson and Strey each had RBIs for the Chaparrals.

The Chaps host Whittlesey on Friday at 7:30 p.m.

MERRILL – The Marshfield Clinic Post 54 Blue Demons Junior American Legion baseball team won a doubleheader against Merrill on Tuesday night.

Marshfield edged Merrill 2-1 in eight innings, then rolled to a 20-0 victory to improve to 6-7 this summer.

Jared Klein had the game-winning, RBI single in the top of the eighth inning to win Game 1 for Marshfield. Mason Tysver worked the final two innings to earn the win. Aaron Braun threw six innings, allowing just the one run to Merrill.

Scott Berg grabbed the win in Game 2, throwing four scoreless innings and allowing just three hits.

The Marshfield Junior Legion squad is back in action Friday, Saturday and Sunday at the La Crosse Tournament. Marshfield will play Union Grove in the opener on Friday.

Marshfield senior catcher Daulton Varsho has been selected as the top senior Infielder/Catcher as part of the Wisconsin Sports Network (wissports.net) senior Baseball Awards.

Varsho was a first-team all-state selection at catcher by the Wisconsin Baseball Coaches Association after earning second-team honors last year. He was the Wisconsin Valley Conference Player of the Year, hitting .462 with six home runs, 31 RBI, 35 runs scored, and 17 stolen bases.

Varsho was a four-year varsity starter for the Tigers, earning honorable mention all-conference as a freshman, second team accolades as a sophomore, and unanimous first-team honors as both a junior and senior.

Varsho will play collegiately at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee next season.

Other finalists for the award were Carter Amundsen of Sheboygan South, Turner Doornink of Clintonville, Nick Lemke of Rosholt, and Kyle Mrozinski of Ashwaubenon.

Past winners of the award include Prescott’s Billy Brookshaw (2012) and Bay Port’s Drew Neuville (2013).

Jeren Kendall of Holmen was named the top senior Outfielder and Cal Giese of Stevens Point was tapped as the top senior Pitcher by wissports.net.

PLOVER – The Marshfield Clinic Post 54 Blue Demons Junior American Legion baseball team lost both games of a doubleheader to Plover on Monday at Memorial Park.

Plover won 8-2 and 12-3, pushing Marshfield’s record to 4-7 this season.

Braden Bohman and Aaron Braun each had doubles in the second game.

Marshfield plays a doubleheader at Merrill on Tuesday.

WISCONSIN RAPIDS – The Marshfield Clinic Post 54 Blue Devils American Legion varsity baseball team finished in second place at the Wisconsin Rapids Tournament this past weekend.

After winning twice on Saturday, the Blue Devils (5-4) split a pair of games Sunday.

Marshfield beat Nekoosa 14-6 in the semifinals behind a complete game from pitcher Trevor Schwecke. Caleb Alexander had a single and a double in the victory.

Marshfield, which edged Green Bay Southwest 2-1 on Saturday, couldn’t beat them again, however, losing to Southwest in the tournament championship game 7-2.

Bobby Pilz suffered the loss for the Blue Devils, despite allowing just one earned run in five innings. Daulton Varsho had a triple for Marshfield.

Marshfield hosts Wausau on Monday at 7 p.m. at Jack Hackman Field.

Marshfield seniors Darian Molter and Walker Guzowski were named as first-team selections to the 2014 All-Wisconsin Valley Conference Girls Soccer Team.

Molter was a unanimous pick as a forward, earning first-team all-conference honors for the fourth straight year. Guzowski was picked to the first team as a midfielder for the second year in a row.

Marshfield senior defender Michelle Aspeslet was the Tigers’ lone honorable mention choice.

D.C. Everest’s Maddie Mittelsteadt was named WVC Player of the Year.

WISCONSIN RAPIDS – The Marshfield Clinic Post 54 Blue Devils American Legion baseball team won both of its games Saturday at the Wisconsin Rapids Tournament.

The Blue Devils (4-3) edged Green Bay Southwest 2-1 and blanked Wisconsin Rapids 7-0 to move along in the tournament.

Drew Spaeth tossed a complete game and Caleb Alexander had a pair of doubles in the win over Southwest.

Jeremy Binder continued Marshfield’s hot pitching with a three-hit shutout against Rapids. Daulton Varsho had three hits, including a two-run home run, in the win.

Marshfield plays at 10 a.m. Sunday.
