HUDSON – The Marshfield softball team’s postseason run came to an abrupt halt with an extra-inning defeat on Tuesday.

Alyssa Stich hit a home run with two outs in the bottom of eighth inning to lift Hudson to a 2-1 victory over Marshfield in a WIAA Division 1 sectional semifinal at Grandview Park.

Marshfield pitcher Megan Donahue was rolling along, allowing just three hits and one run in 7 2/3 innings with 17 strikeouts before Stich won it with the walk-off bomb.

Marshfield (15-13) scored in the top of the first inning on an RBI double by Lexi Dupee that scored Emily Draeger. That was all the Tigers could muster against Hudson pitchers Katie Cardell and Jordan Little.

Cardell left in the fourth after giving up six hits and two walks, and Little entered and struck out 11 in 4 2/3 innings to earn the win.

Hudson (19-7) moves on to a sectional final against Stevens Point (25-3) at 5 p.m. Thursday at the Marshfield Fairgrounds. The winner advances to the 2016 WIAA State Softball Tournament in Madison on June 9-11.

MARSHFIELD – The Marshfield offense was held hitless through the first three innings of its WIAA Division 1 baseball regional semifinal on Tuesday, but the bats were hot in the fourth and turned the game around.

The Tigers smacked seven hits and plated seven runs in the decisive fourth inning and they went on to a commanding 10-2 victory over Merrill at Jack Hackman Field.

Marshfield (13-13) moves on to a Division 1 regional final at Eau Claire North (19-2) on Thursday. The game will be played at Carson Park beginning at 1 p.m. and will be broadcast on WDLB-AM 1450 and wdlbwosq.com.

Merrill (9-15) scored an unearned run in the first inning and maintained the 1-0 lead as pitcher Ryan Golish kept the Tigers hitless through three innings.

Trevor Schwecke, who went 3-for-4 in the game, led off the bottom of the fourth with a double to break up the no-hitter and open the flood gates for Marshfield.

The Tigers had six more hits and walked three times in the inning to pile up seven runs and take control of the game.

Tyson Slade and Braden Bohman had two-RBI singles, and Jake Brueggen and Schwecke added RBI singles in the inning for the Tigers, chasing Golish from the game.

“Seeing him (Golish) a little bit more and having expectations for ourselves,” Marshfield coach Shane Freitag said were keys in the big inning. “I don’t think he got tired, but as he went on his velocity was going down a little bit. I think seeing through the second time and knowing what to expect from him (were factors).”

Brueggen did the rest on the mound, striking out 10 in 6 1/3 innings. Schwecke finished off the game by getting the final two outs after Brueggen tired and was taken out the game after walking two straight hitters.

Brueggen added an RBI single in the fifth to score Mason Metz, who had walked, to make it 8-1.

Logan Jakobi had an RBI single and Metz delivered a sacrifice fly to score pinch-runner Austin Goode with the Tigers’ final two runs in the sixth.

Eau Claire North, ranked 10th in the last Wisconsin Baseball Coaches Association Division 1 state poll, had a first-round bye and will have a fresh pitching staff heading into the regional final Thursday, making it a tough road for the Tigers. The winner moves on to the sectionals on Tuesday, June 7, at Marshfield.

“We’ve been hitting the ball a little better lately, but we haven’t seen the pitching we are going to see Thursday either,” Freitag said. “I was telling the kids tonight that we had 12 hits tonight and that’s good, but we need to keep doing that. They need to swing the bats.”

SPENCER – Kenya Kaldunski hit a home run with one out in the seventh inning to tie it for Marathon, which went on to plate a run with a bases-loaded walk in the ninth and defeat Spencer 2-1 in a WIAA Division 3 softball regional final Friday at Spencer High School.

Spencer pitcher Macie Weber was two outs away from completing a shutout before Kaldunski went deep to tie the game at 1-1.

In the ninth, Julia Anderson led off the inning with a single and Amanda Kind followed with a double. After Weber got the next two Raiders out, she walked Paige Kurtz and Sasha Hornung to force in what proved to be the winning run for Marathon (15-5).

Weber walked and Cinnamin Harwood singled with two outs in the bottom of the ninth, but Marathon pitcher Cameron Sonnentag was able to get Lexi Baehr to ground to third and Anderson caught the ball and stepped on third for a force out to end the game.

Marathon will take on Marawood Conference South Division rival Stratford (18-6) in a D-3 sectional semifinal Tuesday at Neillsville. Marathon defeated Stratford twice during the conference season. The winner moves on to a sectional final on June 2 at Stevens Point Pacelli with the winner of that game qualifying for the 2016 WIAA State Softball Tournament in Madison on June 9-11.

“That is one of the all-time great games I have been a part of,” Spencer coach Jason Gorst said. “Hats of to Marathon. They are a quality program. I am very proud of our girls’ effort tonight. It was a great season that they should be proud of for years to come.”

Weber and Sonnentag matched zeros until Spencer (17-6) finally got on the scoreboard in the sixth.

Weber doubled, went to third on a wild pitch, and after Sonnentag got two outs, Jenna Schober singled to score Weber and give Spencer a 1-0 lead.

Spencer had two runners on in the first and second innings, and Baehr singled and ended up on third with two outs in the fourth, but Sonnentag was able to wiggle out of the jams each time. Sonnentag finished with six strikeouts and four walks.

Weber struck out five Marathon batters in a row during the second and third innings and Marathon only had one runner advance past first base in the first six innings. She finished with 13 strikeouts and five walks, two coming in the ninth.
