ATHENS – Edgar had the team title wrapped up before the championship matches of the Marawood Conference Wrestling Tournament on Saturday at Athens High School, but the Stratford Tigers had some business to take care of anyway.

The Tigers won three individual titles and vaulted into second place in the conference standings.

Evan Bohman (135 pounds), Ben Robers (160) and Indy Spindler (289) won titles for Stratford and the Tigers ended up taking second in both the dual meet season and in the tournament behind Edgar.

The three titles, and a second-place finish by Mark Marquardt at 145, pushed Stratford from fourth place past Chequamegon and Athens.

“Evan Bohman worked really hard with a lot of off-season training, so it was neat for him to pull that out,” Stratford co-coach Joe Schwabe said. “Ben Robers, a senior, has really stepped it up.

“Indy’s, he’s just kind of a beast lately. The Auburndale wrestler is an honorable mention all-state, so he’s no slouch. So I’ll take three titles any day.”

Bohman (26-1) won his first Marawood title with a 5-4 win over Colton Ocker of Chequamegon. A takedown early in the third period sealed the win as Bohman was able to ride his way to the end of the match.

Robers (27-7), who also won his first conference title, was dominant.

He earned a takedown early and controlled Marathon’s Ryan Lenard throughout, eventually winning by technical fall 15-0.

“It means a lot, first (championship) ever,” Robers said. “I’m aiming to make it to state – become a state qualifier and hopefully place.”

Spindler improved to 33-3 and was as dominant, just a little quicker. Spindler took control of Auburndale’s Dave Altmann midway through the first period and pinned him at the 1:39 mark to win his second Marawood championship. It was the fourth time Spindler wrestled Atlmann this season.

“I just go wrestle, hit what’s there,” Spindler said. “You don’t even worry about too much, just relax and go with what he gives you.”

Auburndale finished last in the team standings but had two second-place finishes – Clint Moscinski at 152 and Altmann.

Andrew Ringquist was third at 130, and Kyle Kundinger (119) and Cody Kundinger (125) finished fourth for the Apaches.

“We lost a tough one at 125 (Cody Kundinger) in overtime. That was probably the toughest weight class here,” Auburndale coach John Karl said. “It was a good experience for him and will get him ready for regionals in two weeks.

“Heavyweight (Altmann) did a nice job to get to the finals, and (Moscinski) did a good job at 152 in getting second place. He wrestled well in the finals. There were a few matches we could have won – but that’s been kind of how our season’s gone, can’t finish some off.”
