MARSHFIELD – Taylor Asplin scored her first career goal 5:06 into the first half and it held up as the Marshfield girls soccer team blanked Wausau West 1-0 in a Wisconsin Valley Conference game Thursday at Griese Park.

Asplin’s goal came off an assist from Alyssa Brenner and the Tigers defense did the rest as they shut out West for the second time this season.

Marshfield improves to 5-4 and 4-3 in the WVC, while West falls to 1-8 and 1-5 in the Valley.

“It was a pretty goal as Taylor ran thru the kick and volleyed the ball
into the goal with a knee,” Marshfield coach Steve Lindner said. “We have been preaching using the body on those type of shots and Taylor did it to perfection for the game-winner.

Naomi Crump had three saves for Marshfield, which outshot West 14-4.

The shutout was the fourth of the season for the Tigers, which got strong play from senior Sarah Wolff defensively.

“Sarah had a very strong game on defense and anchored the defense and had a super game again,” Lindner said. “She had played very steady all year and at times does not get the recognition she deserves as she is not flashy, but steady, on defense.”

The Tigers host Wausau East next Tuesday and then will host Merrill on Parents Night on Thursday.
