MARSHFIELD – Wisconsin Rapids scored three times in the first inning and three more in the third to defeat Marshfield 7-2 in a Wisconsin Valley Conference softball game Tuesday at the Marshfield Fairgrounds.

The Raiders had three hits in the first inning and four hits in the third off Marshfield pitcher Rhiannon Baierl, who struck out four and walked three. Baierl allowed just two hits in the other five innings, and gave up none during the final three innings.

Offensively, the Tigers couldn’t capitalize on some scoring chances they had against Rapids pitcher Kelsey Kuhn (seven strikeouts, two walks).

Marshfield pounded eight hits but managed just two runs. Becky Boehning singled and scored on a throwing error in the third, and in the fifth Boehning singled and scored on another single by Baierl. Boehning, Baierl and Lindsey Duerr each had two hits for the Tigers.

“We had six of our seven strikeouts in the first two innings,” Marshfield coach Mike Voss said. “We’d get runners on base and have some untimely strikeouts and weren’t able to get anything going. Both pitchers did a good job and they just had some timely hitting.”

Marshfield plays at D.C. Everest on Thursday and at Mosinee on Friday.
