MARSHFIELD – The Marshfield softball team wrapped up its regular season with a narrow 3-1 loss to Wausau West on Thursday at the Marshfield Fairgrounds.

The Tigers finish their season winless in the Wisconsin Valley Conference at 0-12 and are 3-15 overall. West improves to 9-9 and finishes the WVC schedule at 4-8.

West led 3-0 heading into the seventh inning when the Tigers finally got to Warriors pitcher Sammy Laatsch.

Sara Sturomski singled with one out, moved to third on an error and scored on a single by Katie Treankler. However, Laatsch got the final two outs of the game on a fly ball and a groundout to end the rally.

Rhiannon Baierl struck out six and did not walk a batter in the loss for Marshfield.

“Rhiannon did a better job of getting ahead in the count and kept the ball down,” Marshfield coach Mike Voss said. “West came up with some big hits when they needed it.”

West had seven of its nine hits in the second and third innings, when it scored its three runs.

Marshfield will play a WIAA Division 1 regional semifinal at Merrill on Tuesday. The Tigers lost to Merrill three times this season.

“We are playing a team we are very familiar with,” Voss said. “The two conference games came down to the same things most of our games have. They had one or two big hits and had some big innings, and we weren’t able to do that.”
