Marshfield Columbus Catholic boys golf team qualifies for WIAA state tournament

MARATHON – Jordan Derfus shot an 83 to lead the Marshfield Columbus Catholic boys golf team to a second-place finish at the WIAA Division 3 Boys Golf Sectional at Pine Valley Golf Course on Tuesday.

With the second-place finish, the Dons qualify for the WIAA State Boys Golf Championships at University Ridge Golf Course in Verona next Monday and Tuesday.

Ben Reigel shot an 87, Zach Strobel had a 93 and Sam Stassen fired a 94 to give the Dons a score of 357, 10 shots ahead of Wausau Newman Catholic and three shots behind sectional champion Stevens Point Pacelli.

Ben Ehlers of Sevastopol shot a 75 to win medalist honors by five shots over Pacelli’s Chris O’Sullivan.

Brad Steiber of Marathon (81) and David Niemuth of Manawa (84) earned the other two individual qualifier spots.

The top two teams and the top three individuals not on those teams move on to the state tournament.
