Marshfield graduate Sean Harrington named to all-American academic team

LA CROSSE – Sean Harrington, a 2007 Marshfield High School graduate and a senior at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse, has been selected to the 2011 Capital One Academic All-America Men’s Track and Field/Cross Country Team.

The team was selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

Harrington, a senior, was named to the Academic All-America Second Team. His teammate, Paul Yerhot of Chaska, Minn., was a first-team selection.

Harrington, a physics and mathematics major, has a 3.98 grade point average. He was selected the 2011 WIAC Outdoor Track & Field Co-Scholar-Athlete. He placed fifth in the 10,000-meter run at the 2011 WIAC Outdoor Championships and 16th at the 2011 NCAA Division III Outdoor Championships. Harrington was third in the 10,000-meters at the 2010 outdoor conference meet. Indoors, Harrington finished second in the 5,000-meter run at the 2011 WIAC Championships.

During the cross country season, Harrington earned All-WIAC Second Team honors with a 13th-place finish at the 2010 league championships. He also finished 45th at the NCAA Division III Midwest Regional. Harrington recorded a fifth-place finish at the UW-Eau Claire Blugold Open and 24th-place finish at the Jim Drews Invitational.

A track & field team captain this year for the Eagles, Harrington has been a member of the Dean’s List all four years at La Crosse. He was the recipient of six academic scholarships and a Goldwater Scholarship nominee. Harrington earned the Wisconsin Space Grant Undergraduate Scholarship in 2010 and Research Fellowship Award in 2009, and he is a member of the American Physical Society.
