Marshfield volleyball team hosts tournament, places second behind Merrill

MARSHFIELD – The Marshfield volleyball team opened its season by hosting a six-team tournament Tuesday at Marshfield High School.

The tigers finished 4-1, losing only to Merrill in a three-game match. Merrill beat Marshfield 25-14, 20-25, 15-12, and finished a perfect 5-0.

Marshfield defeated Menasha 18-25, 25-15, 15-7, Wausau Newman Catholic 25-10, 25-10, Baldwin-Woodville 25-19, 25-18, and Antigo 25-17, 25-21.

The Tigers’ offense was paced by Tiffany Stargardt, who had a team-high 43 kills. Mikala Sebastian added 32 kills and 18 block kills, and Courtney Bauer had 20 kills and 12 block kills. Setter Mary Wolff led the Tigers with 63 assists and Chelsea Akin had a team-high eight service aces.

Marshfield will play in a two-day tournament Friday and Saturday at Sun Prairie and will host another tournament at the high school on Sept. 3.

Final team standings: Merrill 5-0, Marshfield 4-1, Antigo 3-2, Wausau Newman Catholic 2-3, Menasha 1-4, Baldwin-Woodville 0-5.
