MARSHFIELD – The Marshfield volleyball team dominated the Marshfield Invitational on Saturday, taking first place with a 5-0 record.

The Tigers swept all five opponents. Marshfield beat Abbotsford 2-11, 25-12; Medford 25-14, 25-18; Rhinelander 25-18, 25-18; Weyauwega-Fremont 25-8, 2-10; and Superior 25-10, 25-12, to win the title.

Mikala Sebastian had 34 kills and 14 block kills, Tiffany Stargardt had 28 kills, seven service aces and 49 digs, and Chelsea Akin had 27 kills and seven service aces for the Tigers. Setter Mary Wolff had a team-high 78 assists and Darian Molter led Marshfield’s defense with 62 digs.

“We did a much better job with our serve receive today, and because of that, our setters were able to spread the ball around a little more,” Marshfield coach Dawn Sadowska said. “We saw excellent performances from Chelsea Akin and Mikala Sebastian as they were much more aggressive offensively. This is a very positive way to go into conference play next week.”

Marshfield hosts Wausau East in its Wisconsin Valley Conference opener on Thursday.

Team standings: 1. Marshfield; 2. Rhinelander; 3. Superior; 4. Medford; 5. Weyauwega-Fremont; 6. Abbotsford.
