MARSHFIELD – Sophomores Austin Gilbert and Matt McCann made sure the six Marshfield seniors on the boys soccer team went out winners in their final home game.

McCann scored a goal on an assist from Gilbert midway through the first half and Gilbert knocked in the game-winner 2:54 into overtime to lift the Tigers to a 2-1 win over D.C. Everest in the final home game of the season Thursday at Griese Park.

McCann’s goal gave Marshfield a 1-0 lead and it held until Matt Murphy scored 8:22 into the second half to tie the game for the Evergreens.

Neither team could muster much offense the rest of the way before Gilbert knocked in a free kick from about 35 yards out with 7:06 to go in overtime to give Marshfield its second win in a row.

“It was a fantastic win for the team,” Marshfield coach Ron Todryk said. “I feel like we have finally put everything together and are starting to gel.”

Marshfield’s defense was on top of its game, allowing just two shots on goal.

Seniors Quinn Schuster, Erik Holm, Nick Guzowski, Al Reeser, Alex Kelnhofer and Jack Haessly played their final home game for the Tigers.

Marshfield (7-9-2, 5-6 Wisconsin Valley Conference) closes out its regular-season schedule on Oct. 6 at Stevens Point. The game, at Portage County Youth Soccer Complex, starts at 7 p.m.
