Stevens Point holds off Marshfield boys basketball

STEVENS POINT – The Marshfield boys basketball team let a chance to move to 2-0 in the Wisconsin Valley Conference slip away Friday night as it dropped a 52-48 decision to Stevens Point at Stevens Point Area Senior High.

The Tigers was up by a point with a little less than 3 minutes left, but missed six straight free throws down the stretch and saw SPASH pull away to the four-point win. Marshfield finished 7 of 17 from the free-throw line.

Elliot Ashbeck scored 17 points and Ben Satter added 13 for the Tigers, who fall to 2-2 and 1-1 in the WVC. SPASH improves to 4-2 and 2-1 in the conference.

Marshfield led 15-9 before the Panthers surged ahead 30-23 at halftime. The Tigers hung around and took a one-point lead late before faltering.

Stevens Point made seven 3-pointers in the victory.

The Tigers play their first home game of the season Tuesday against Wausau West.
