MARSHFIELD – After two disappointing losses at its own holiday tournament, the Marshfield girls basketball team won its second straight, beating Tomah 80-37 on Tuesday night at Marshfield High School.

Taylor Varsho scored 21 points, grabbed 10 rebounds, dished out five assists and had three steals to lead the Tigers (6-3) in the nonconference matchup.

Marshfield jumped out to a 6-0 lead and never trailed. Varsho and Tiffany Stargardt each scored six points in the opening quarter as the Tigers built a 15-5 lead.

The Tigers exploded for 24 points in the second quarter thanks to guards Ellie Kummer and Leah Ripp. Both hit two 3-pointers and Kummer added another hoop to push the Tigers’ lead to 39-16 at halftime.

Marshfield kept up the pressure, allowing just one basket and eight points in the third quarter. Ripp added five more points in the third and finished with a season-high 13 points.

With the reserves playing much of the fourth quarter, Marshfield continued to dominate.

Kummer assisted Makayla Zimmerman after she curled around a screen set by sophomore Emily Goeppinger and Zimmerman converted on the three-point play.
Caitlin Michaelis hit her third 3-point basket of the game and Kummer converted a 4-point play when she was fouled after making her third 3-pointer. Kummer, a freshman, had a career-high 12 points. Stargardt added 12 points and eight rebounds and Michaelis finished with 11 points for the Tigers.

Marshfield hosts Wausau East on Friday and will have a week off before the “Fill the Fieldhouse Night” at Marshfield against Wisconsin Rapids on Jan. 20. The Tigers girls will take on the Raiders at 6 p.m., followed by the boys matchup with Rapids at 7:45 p.m. The Tigers Hoops Club players will be honored at the event.
