Marshfield boys basketball team overcomes 16-point halftime deficit to beat Wausau East in overtime

WAUSAU – Elliot Ashbeck scored 27 of his game-high 33 points in the second half and overtime leading the Marshfield boys basketball team to a come-from-behind 61-60 overtime win over Wausau East on Friday night at Wausau East High School.

The Tigers trailed 35-19 at halftime before rallying in the second half behind the senior. Ashbeck scored 13 of the Tigers’ 19 points in the third quarter and 11 of his team’s 15 points in the fourth to force a 53-53 tie and send the game into overtime.

In the extra frame, Ashbeck scored four points and Isaac Accola had a steal and two free throws with 5 seconds to go to seal the victory. East made a 3-pointer at the buzzer to provide for the final score.

Marshfield had a chance to win it at the end of regulation. Luke Zuiker made a basket but was called for a charging foul in the final seconds.

Conrad Felten made all nine of his free throw attempts and finished with 15 points for East (7-5, 1-3 Wisconsin Valley Conference).

The Tigers (6-4, 3-3 WVC) are off until next Friday when they host Wisconsin Rapids in a doubleheader. The girls varsity plays at 6 p.m. with the boys game starting at 7:45 p.m.
