WAUSAU – For the second time in the last four games, the Marshfield boys basketball team pulled out a victory just before the buzzer.

Elliot Ashbeck made an off-balance 10-footer in the lane with 1.6 seconds left and Marshfield deflected an inbounds pass as time expired as the Tigers beat Wausau West 42-41 in a Wisconsin Valley Conference game Tuesday night at West High School.

Ashbeck scored 23 points, making 10 of 11 free throws, including a pair with 30 seconds to go to give Marshfield a 40-38 lead.

The advantage was short-lived as Taylor Penn drilled a 3-pointer with 19.7 seconds to go to put West up 41-40, before Ashbeck made the shot in the final seconds to give Marshfield its fourth win in the last five games. The Tigers’ Luke Zuiker hit a buzzer-beater on Jan. 20 to beat Wisconsin Rapids in another last-second thriller.

The Tigers improve to 10-5 and 6-2 in the WVC, where they are in sole possession of second place after Stevens Point’s loss to Wausau East on Tuesday. Marshfield hosts Stevens Point on Friday.

Ben Satter added eight point and Zuiker had seven for the Tigers.
