Spencer boys basketball edges Athens in WIAA Division 5 regional quarterfinal

SPENCER – Steven Gilboy scored 16 points and Jeremiah Cattanach added 15 to lead the Spencer boys basketball team to a 58-55 win over Athens in a WIAA Division 4 regional quarterfinal Tuesday night at Spencer High School.

The game was tight throughout with Spencer holding on to a 34-30 lead entering the fourth quarter. Both teams exploded over the final 8 minutes, with Athens outscoring the Rockets 25-24 but unable to overcome the entire deficit.

Spencer (13-10), seeded sixth, moves on to a Division 4 regional semifinal Friday at No. 3 seed Colby (16-6). Colby defeated Spencer handily both times they met in Cloverbelt East play this season. The Hornets won 54-40 on Jan. 6 at Spencer, and 84-52 on Feb. 17 at Colby.

Gilboy added 14 rebounds and Sam Cattanach had 12 boards for the Rockets, who held a 36-19 rebounding advantage.

Jayden Dobbs led Athens (9-13) with 23 points.
