10-run first inning pushes Neillsville past Spencer softball

SPENCER – Neillsville stunned Spencer with 10 runs in the top of the first inning and went on to an 18-9 win over the Rockets in a Cloverbelt Conference East Division softball game Friday at Spencer High School.

The Warriors (10-1, 7-0 Cloverbelt East) took advantage of some Spencer errors and three walks to score eight unearned runs against pitcher Tynae Phillips, who only got one out before being removed.

Spencer (9-4, 5-3 Cloverbelt East) managed nine runs and 11 hits but couldn’t overcome the Warriors’ first inning.

Dani Johnson went 3-for-4 with two runs, and Courtney Schulz and Marisa Johnson each had two hits for the Rockets. Paige Johnson and Brooke Kettleborough smacked home runs for Spencer.

Alyssa Anding led the charge for Neillsville, which had 18 hits in all. Anding was 4-for-6 with a double, three RBIs and three runs scored for the Warriors. Jenny Lindner added three hits and three RBIs, and Katrina Strobush had three hits for Neillsville.

Spencer plays at Augusta on Tuesday.
