MARSHFIELD – D.C. Everest controlled the ball the vast majority of the second half and held off a late rally by Marshfield to beat the Tigers 3-2 in a Wisconsin Valley Conference girls soccer game on Senior Day on Tuesday at Griese Park.

Emily Wolfe scored on a breakaway with 4:30 left to get the Tigers within a goal at 3-2, but Marshfield only briefly had the ball in the Everest zone during those final minutes and couldn’t get another shot on goal.

Everest stays in the Wisconsin Valley Conference race with a 7-1-1 record (12-4-4 overall), while the Tigers fall to 11-5-2 and 5-5 in the Valley.

“D.C. Everest just dominated us in the second half and we only let in one goal, and that’s a tribute to the defense,” Marshfield coach Steve Lindner said. “It is frustrating, but at the same time we had some bright spots. Emily Wolfe had an outstanding game and had that late goal to give us a chance.

“We had some nice attacks in the first half and just couldn’t get anything going against the wind in the second half. D.C. Everest was just a step quicker.”

Gretchen Murphy scored 9:56 into the game and Elise Thuot added another goal at the 14:19 mark to give the Evergreens a quick 2-0 lead.

Mardie Shanahan cut the lead in half with a goal, off an assist from Alison Gruen, at the 28:58 mark and the 2-1 deficit held until the second 20 minutes of the second half.

Kayla Huber netted a goal at 66:03 to push Everest’s lead to 3-1 before Wolfe again brought the Tigers within a goal.

Despite the loss, Lindner said he is happy with the way the Tigers have been playing and the position they have put themselves in with the playoffs coming up in two weeks.

“Our goal is to get ready for the playoffs and do real well, and do a little better than last year,” Lindner said. “That means probably playing Everest again and trying to get over that hump. We’ve played ourselves into a decent seed and we’re gearing up to play in the playoffs.”

Marshfield has the rest of the week off and will wrap up its regular season with road games at Stevens Point on May 22 and at Wisconsin Rapids on May 24.
