MERRILL – The Marshfield softball team saw its season come to an end with an 8-1 loss to Merrill in a WIAA Division 1 regional semifinal Tuesday.

Merrill (18-6) scored six runs from the fourth through sixth innings to bust open a tight game and advance to Thursday’s regional final at home against Rhinelander (13-7).

Marshfield finishes the season 4-17.

Miranda Baierl and Taylor Hasz each had two hits as the Tigers had eight in all.

Marshfield scored its only run in the second to tie the game at 1-1. Caitlin Kozik reached on an error and ended up scoring on a two-out single by Jordan Green.

“We could never getting going early enough in an inning,” Marshfield coach Mike Voss said. “The first four innings we played good ball, but in the fifth we had an error and two of the runs in the sixth were unearned.

“I was encouraged by the progress we made over the course of the season. We saw it in every practice and every game. We have a lot of potential, we need to keep working at it and keep improving.”
