WESTON – Marshfield’s Thomas Kruger scored with 6:34 left in regulation to tie the game with D.C. Everest 1-1 and the score remained that way through two overtimes as the two teams tied a Wisconsin Valley Conference boys soccer match Thursday night at D.C. Everest Middle School.

After a scoreless first half, Zach Holdridge finally found the back of a net when the Everest player scored at the 68-minute mark to give the Evergreens a 1-0 lead.

Krueger answered 5:26 later off an assist from Austin Gilbert.

A 6-second call on Everest goalkeeper Nathan Kitchell gave the Tigers a free-kick, which saw Gilbert push a through ball to Kruger, who knocked it in to tie the game.

Kitchell made eight saves in goal for D.C. Everest, while Marshfield goalie Trenton Todryk had five saves.

“Their keeper plays the box extremely well and seldom makes mistakes,” Marshfield coach Ron Todryk said of Kitchell.

Trenton Todryk matched the Everest keeper.

“With less than a minute left (in the first half) Everest pushed a ball through our defense and had a one-on-one with our keeper,” Ron Todryk said. “Trenton made a good play which forced the Everest player to shoot wide as the half ended.

“Missing three regular starters forced others to step up. Eli Oba played fantastic at the sweeper position for us – his ability to control the ball and start our counter attack made a big difference tonight. Austin Gilbert seemed to take control of the team tonight and his leadership on the field keep the team playing at a high level the entire game.”

Marshfield (6-13-2, 3-6-2 Wisconsin Valley Conference) wraps up its regular-season schedule on Oct. 4 at home against Stevens Point with a 4 p.m. game at Griese Park.

Everest (9-5-4, 6-1-3 WVC) plays at Stevens Point on Tuesday and hosts Wisconsin Rapids next Thursday still with a chance at the conference title. The Evergreens remain four points behind Wausau East for first place in the WVC. East’s final conference game is Tuesday at Wausau West.
