Columbus girls hold off Loyal

LOYAL – Paige Albrecht continued her hot scoring streak, tallying 16 points in Marshfield Columbus Catholic’s 38-37 victory Friday in a Cloverbelt Conference East Division girls basketball game at Loyal High School.

Albrecht hit 7 of 16 shots from the field and also added five steals in the win for the Dons, who improve to 12-7 overall and 10-5 in the Cloverbelt East. With the win and Spencer’s loss to Greenwood, the Dons have climbed into a third-place tie in the conference standings with one game remaining.

Columbus hosts Augusta and Spencer is at home against Neillsville on Monday. The Dons will play on the road in an East-West crossover game next Friday to close out the regular season.

Columbus held on despit making just 7 of 18 free throws and shooting just 25.4 percent (15 of 59) from the field.

Loyal (8-12, 6-9 Cloverbelt East) didn’t shoot much better, making 31.3 percent of its shots (15 of 48), but outrebounded Columbus 49-38.

Columbus forced 23 turnovers and had 12 steals, led by Albrecht’s five.

Karissa Rueth led Loyal with 11 points and Breanna Lavene had 13 rebounds.
