URBANA, Ill. – The Marshfield girls soccer team traveled to Illinois for a pair of games Saturday at the Urbana Girls Soccer Invitational.

The Tigers lost 2-1 to Geneseo before defeating St. Thomas More of Champaign, Ill., 2-1.

Marshfield won a coin flip and was put into the winner’s bracket of the tournament, which began on Friday. The Tigers and Stevens Point traveled to Urbana together to participate in the second day of the tournament.

Kate Herron had seven saves for Marshfield in the loss to Geneseo. Darian Molter score the only goal for the Tigers.

Alison Gruen scored both of Marshfield’s goals in the win over St. Thomas More. Herron, a freshman, only had to make three saves for the Tigers to earn her first varsity victory.

“We started four different freshmen on the day and all played well and gained some invaluable experience,” Marshfield coach Steve Lindner said. “The upperclassmen really played well and their varsity experience showed as they looked in stride for the initial games for outside play.”

Gruen and Megan Marotz were named to the all-tournament team.

Marshfield is scheduled to open its Wisconsin Valley Conference schedule April 16 at home against D.C. Everest.
