Marshfield boys golf fifth at WIAA Division 1 sectional at Stevens Point

STEVENS POINT – The Marshfield boys golf team’s successful season came to an end Tuesday at the WIAA Division 1 sectional at Stevens Point Country Club.

The Tigers, who finished third in the Wisconsin Valley Conference this season and was the runner-up at last week’s regional in Wausau, ended up fifth at the sectional with a score of 330.

Stevens Point won the meet with a score of 305, led by meet medalist Trevor Thomas, who shot a 70. Eau Claire North was second with a 309.

The top two teams and top three individuals not on those teams qualify for the 2013 WIAA State Boys Golf Meet at University Ridge Golf Club in Verona on June 3-4.

Craig Serchen led Marshfield with an 80, finishing in a tie for 13th overall and four shots back of the final individual qualifier, Sawyer Weiss of Eau Claire Memorial, who shot a 77.

Weiss birdied the first playoff hole to edge Matt Sandquist of Wausau West for the final individual spot.

Garrett Loomis and Joe Bodahl of River Falls tied for third with 76s to earn the other two individual spots at the state tournament.

Rounding out the Marshfield scoring was Josh Berres (81), Kyle Hoffman (84) and Evan Schneider (85).
