Eau Claire North shuts out Marshfield to win WIAA Division 1 baseball regional title

MARSHFIELD – Eau Claire North scored single runs in five separate innings and pitcher Sam Hurt shut down Marshfield on five hits as the Huskies won 5-0 in a WIAA Division 1 baseball regional final Thursday at Jack Hackman Field.

North (9-15) moves on to the Division 1 sectional at Wisconsin Rapids on Tuesday. The Huskies will play either Stevens Point or River Falls in a semifinal at 10 a.m. at Witter Field. Marshfield ends its season with an 11-11 record.

Hurt struck out eight and walked four, scattering five hits to earn the complete-game win. Marshfield had just two hits through five innings. The Tigers picked up a pair of singles in the sixth and had a single and a walk in the seventh, but couldn’t muster any runs against the Eau Claire North hurler.

Ryan Conner had an RBI single in the first, Nate Sorenson walked and moved around on a pair of wild pitches in the third, and Dominic Berlin had an RBI single in the fifth to give the Huskies a 3-0 lead and knock out Marshfield starting pitcher Bo Howard.

North scored twice against Tigers reliever Jack Donahue. Hurt had an RBI single in the sixth and Tyler Fencl plated a run with a double in the top of the seventh to make it 5-0.

Jared Kief was 2-for-2 with a walk for Marshfield.
