MARSHFIELD – The Marshfield girls soccer team made quick work of Superior, scoring twice in the first six minutes and five times in the first half on its way to a 7-1 win in a WIAA Division 1 regional semifinal Thursday at Griese Park.

Darian Molter scored the first three goals for the Tigers and Molly Field scored twice as Marshfield’s moves on to a regional final on Saturday against Stevens Point (13-1-1). The game will be played at the Portage County Soccer Complex at 11 a.m. Stevens Point beat Merrill 6-0 on Thursday.

Molter scored at 4:51 and 5:48 to put the Tigers up 2-0.

Superior converted a corner kick into a goal by Cassie Hanson at the 10:49 mark, but that was all the Spartans would get.

Julia Urban scored at the 28:39 mark and Field added a goal 1:17 later to make it 5-1 by halftime.

The quick start was exactly what Marshfield (11-6-1) needed, coach Steve Lindner said.

“Darian really stepped up with a couple of super shots right off the bat,” Lindner said. “Within six minutes she had two goals and against the wind we were a little tentative and a little nervous before we got going. They were confident, but anxious to get started. They really played well tonight.

Alison Gruen tapped in a goal off the back leg of Superior goalie Sara Balcer 8:12 into the second half and Field knocked in another score 4 minutes later to finish the scoring.

The Tigers will face Wisconsin Valley Conference co-champion Stevens Point for the third time this season on Saturday. Marshfield, which posted its best season ever in the WVC with 22 points (seven wins and a tie), lost 3-1 in both matchups with the Panthers this season.

“We’re real confident playing them again for the third time,” Lindner said. “We played them quite even last time. They’re a super team. They have one loss and a tie (13-1-1) for a reason…because they are a quality team. We really believe we can play with them and have some good success.”
