PLOVER – The Marshfield Legion baseball team came up one win short of a trip to the state tournament.

After winning two games in the loser’s bracket, the Blue Devils dropped a 17-7 decision to Plover in the Class AAA regional championship game Sunday at Memorial Field.

Luke Wirtz hit three home runs and accounted for all seven of Marshfield’s RBIs in the loss.

Marshfield led 6-4 in the fifth inning before the Black Sox rallied with 13 runs in the final five innings.

Marshfield defeated Stevens Point 10-0 on Wednesday in the opening game before losing Friday to Wausau 11-8.

The Blue Devils came back Saturday with a pair of wins, defeating Wisconsin Rapids 8-4 and Wausau 13-9.

Jack Donahue threw a complete game and Caleb Alexander smacked a home run in the win over Rapids.

Aaron Schwecke had a go-ahead, two-run double in the bottom of the eighth inning to propel Marshfield past Wausau.

Plover will compete in the Class AAA State Legion Tournament this week in Marinette.

Daulton Varsho and Schwecke were named to the all-Wisconsin Valley Legion League team for the season.

Marshfield finishes its season with a 22-12 record.
