MERRILL – Rebecca Voss finished as the runner-up in the girls race as the Marshfield girls finished fifth at the 2013 Wisconsin Valley Conference Cross Country Meet on Saturday at the Merrill Area Recreation Center.
Voss finished in 15:20.5, less than 2 seconds behind winner Mya Zajakowski of Stevens Point (15:18.8).
Dani Bender had Marshfield’s next-best finish, taking 25th in 17:06.8.
“Rebecca ran a brilliant race today in placing second overall,” Marshfield coach Dan Akin said. “She certainly showed everyone what an outstanding runner she is.”
Stevens Point won both the girls and boys team titles.
The Stevens Point girls won the title for the second straight year, edging Wausau East by nine points.
The Stevens Point boys won for the 26th straight time and for the 36th time in 37 seasons.
Evan Hatton of Stevens Point won the individual title in 16:19.5, and Point swept the top four spots and had seven of the top 10 finishers.
Marshfield’s Max Tibbett was 13th in 17:31.7, with Devon Klement 21st in 17:51.6, as the Tigers were last in the team standings.
“Max went out and made sure he got an all-conference award,” Akin said. “It wasn’t his best race, but he took care of business today with a great effort. Devon has had a solid first season and has ran well, especially this month.”
Marshfield will compete at the WIAA Division 1 sectional at Standing Rock Park in Stevens Point next Saturday, Oct. 26. The girls race starts at 11 a.m., with the boys to follow at noon.
