Waupaca storms back to shock Auburndale boys basketball

AUBURNDALE – Waupaca came back from a double-digit halftime deficit to stun undefeated Auburndale 50-43 in the championship game of the Auburndale Boys Basketball Holiday Tournament on Saturday night at Auburndale High School.

The Apaches led 26-12 at halftime before Waupaca (6-3) came back with an 18-6 third quarter to cut the lead to two, then outscored Auburndale 20-11 in the fourth to win it.

Auburndale was hurt by poor free-throw shooting as it made just 5 of 11 for the game and was 3 of 7 in the fourth quarter. Waupaca, on the other hand, was 10 of 13 and 6 of 7 in the fourth.

Zander Neuville finished with 20 points, 10 coming in the fourth quarter. Nate Jenson added 18 points. The Comets’ duo combined for 26 points in the second half.

Blake Anderson hit four 3-pointers and scored 12 points to top Auburndale (7-1). Josh VanShoick added 10 points and six rebounds.

Auburndale is off until Jan. 7 when it hosts Marathon in a battle of unbeaten Marawood Conference South Division teams. Both teams stand at 5-0 in conference play.
