Merrill surges past Marshfield girls basketball

MERRILL – The Marshfield girls basketball team overcame a halftime deficit only to Merrill turn the tables again in the fourth quarter and pull out a 51-46 victory in a Wisconsin Valley Conference game Tuesday night at Merrill High School.

The Bluejays led 27-20 at halftime before Marshfield used a big third quarter to move ahead 38-37 heading into the fourth.

Merrill responded with a 14-8 advantage over the final 8 minutes to earn the victory and pull into a tie for third place with Marshfield in the Wisconsin Valley Conference standings. Merrill is now 8-5 overall, while Marshfield drops to 6-7. Both teams are 3-2 in the conference.

Caitlin Michaelis and Ellie Fehrenbach each had 12 points to top Marshfield. Fehrenbach was 10 of 12 at the free throw line.

Marshfield was 20 of 29 at the free throw line, but made just 11 of 37 shots from the field and was only 4 of 18 from 3-point range.

Ellie Kummer added nine points and Natalie Zuelke had a team-high nine rebounds for Marshfield.

Renee Sladek scored 18 points to lead Merrill.

Marshfield hosts Wausau West on Friday.
