Columbus Catholic boys basketball drops road game at first-place Neillsville

NEILLSVILLE – Neillsville raced out to a double-digit advantage after the first quarter and pulled away late to defeat Marshfield Columbus Catholic 54-41 in a Cloverbelt Conference East Division boys basketball game Friday night at Neillsville High School.

The win allows Neillsville (11-4) to keep its share of the Cloverbelt East lead with Owen-Withee, which won against Colby on Friday, as both teams are now 10-2 in the conference. Columbus Catholic falls out of a tie for third and drops to 10-4 overall and 8-3 in the conference.

Neillsville led 22-10 after the first quarter and 32-21 at halftime. After the Dons closed to within 36-31 after three quarters, the Warriors finished the game with an 18-10 fourth-quarter advantage.

Matt Grottke had 22 points to lead Neillsville.

Jared Fleichmann led all scorers with 23 points for the Dons.

Columbus’ next game is Tuesday at home against Colby. The game will be broadcast on WOSQ-FM 92.3 and wdlbwosq.com beginning with pregame at 7:10 p.m.
