MARSHFIELD – Fifteen minutes into the second half of Thursday’s Wisconsin Valley Conference girls soccer opener, Marshfield and Wausau East were in a dead heat.

During the next 14 minutes, the Tigers’ offense exploded, scoring four times on the way to a 5-1 victory at Griese Park.

Darian Molter scored four times for Marshfield, three in a span of 6:26 to finish off the scoring. Molter has seven goals in the Tigers’ two games this season.

Molter slammed home a goal from 20 yards out at the 28:50 mark to give Marshfield a 1-0 lead, an advantage that held until Mallory Wanserski tied it with a goal 2:13 into the second half for East.

Despite going into a strong wind in the second half, the Tigers continued to control play and finally cashed in on some opportunities.

Walker Guzowski scored off a deflected shot that East goalkeeper Clara Baumann couldn’t clear from the box and put the Tigers up 2-1 at the 57:42 mark.

Molter then scored twice from the top of the goalie box and added another after a deflection following a corner kick with 8:39 remaining.

“We had a lot of great crosses and just didn’t finish,” Marshfield coach Steve Lindner said. “We’re only going to get better as the season goes along. I think sometimes we rely too much on Darian and Walker, and they are strong leaders, but they can’t do it all.

“We need our freshmen to step up and our freshmen midfielders stepped up. Maureen Cassidy and Elizabeth Holbrook, when they were out there, they did a nice job.”

Guzowski finished with a pair of assists and Molly Field and Lauren Seehafer also assisted on goals for the Tigers.

Marshfield will play a nonconference game at Onalaska on Friday night and return to WVC action Tuesday at home against Merrill.
