STEVENS POINT – The Marshfield boys golf team took second place, finishing behind host Stevens Point, to earn a sectional spot at the WIAA Division 1 boys golf regional on Tuesday at Stevens Point Country Club.
Stevens Point had a team score of 313, with Marshfield second with a 332. Wausau West (345) and Wausau East (352) also earned spots at the Division 1 sectional on June 3 at Wild Ridge Golf Club in Eau Claire. The top four teams and best four individuals not on those teams qualify for the sectional.
Josh Berres led Marshfield with a 78 to finish third overall. Ian Pillai tied for fifth with an 82, Kyle Hoffman tied for 11th with an 85, Craig Serchen tied for 15th with an 87 and Derek Michalski finished 18th with an 88 for the Tigers.
Trevor Thomas of Stevens Point edged his brother, Taylor Thomas, by one stroke to win medalist honors.
The top two teams and top three individuals at the sectional will qualify for the 2014 WIAA State Boys Golf Championship at University Ridge Golf Course in Verona on June 9-10.
