OWEN – Owen-Withee High School senior Albert Goerlitz has been named the 2013-14 WDLB-WOSQ Radio and MarshfieldAreaSports.com High School Athlete of the Year.

Goerlitz capped off an incredible three-sport school year for the Blackhawks at the 2014 WIAA State Track & Field Championships in La Crosse on June 6-7 by participating in the 110-meter and 300-meter hurdles. He placed 12th in the Division 3 300 preliminaries and 14th in the 110 prelims at state after finishing third and fourth, respectively, in the two events at the Division 3 sectional.

Goerlitz won Cloverbelt Conference titles in the long jump and triple jump, and placed second in the 110 hurdles and third in the 300 hurdles. At the Division 3 regional, Goerlitz won the triple jump and 300 hurdles, placed second in the 110 hurdles and took third in the long jump to qualify for sectionals in all four events.

The track season was the culmination of a senior year that saw him gain all-state honors in both football and basketball for Owen-Withee, and he was named as a 2013-14 WIAA Scholar Athlete.

Goerlitz was a first-team all-Cloverwood Conference selection at both quarterback and defensive back after helping the Blackhawks to a 9-2 record and a share of the conference title with Athens.

Goerlitz had 569 yards rushing, 450 yards passing and scored 16 touchdowns on offense, and added 99 tackles, three forced fumbles and two interceptions on defense. He also was Owen-Withee’s kicker, making 32 of 34 extra points, and was named as an honorable mention selection to the 2013 Wisconsin Football Coaches Association All-State Team. He was a first-team all-North Central Region selection by the WFCA.

Goerlitz became Owen-Withee’s all-time leading scorer in boys basketball last season, scoring 537 points (21.5 per game) to push his career total to 1,245. He also averaged 11.5 rebounds a game for the Blackhawks, who tied Marshfield Columbus Catholic for first place in the Cloverbelt Conference East Division with a 15-3 record.

Goerlitz was one of 11 players named to the Division 5 first team all-state team by the Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Association.
