RIB MOUNTAIN – The Marshfield girls had three top-30 finishers and finished fourth in the team standings Saturday at the 2014 Wisconsin Valley Conference Cross Country Meet at Nine Mile Forest.
Dani Bender took 17th (20:56.4), Morgan Irish was 25th (21:43.9) and Courtney Brown finished 30th (22:02.9) for the Tigers, who totaled 127 points to finish fourth.
Stevens Point won the girls and boys team championships. The SPASH boys won the title for the 27th year in a row and 37th time in the past 38 years. The girls won the conference meet for the third straight time.
Bender and Devon Klement just missed out on all-conference honors, finishing outside the top 15.
Klement led the Tigers boys by finishing 19th in 17:41.4, 12 seconds out of 15th.
Stevens Point’s Derek Cruz (16:06.3) and Wausau East’s Kennidi Knoblock (18:47.9) were the individual champions. Cruz was second and Knoblock third in last year’s conference meet.
“We are looking at running better at sectionals, but many of our kids ran their best times of the season and that is a great way to finish the season,” Marshfield coach Dan Akin said. “We have so many new runners on the team this season and they learned so much throughout the season. Our veterans have been very good role models throughout the year.”
Marshfield will compete at the WIAA Division 1 Sectional at Standing Rock Park in Stevens Point next Saturday, Oct. 25.
