Columbus Catholic girls basketball team rolls, boys lose tight one at Cranberry Classic

WISCONSIN RAPIDS – The Marshfield Columbus Catholic basketball teams split nonconference games against Pittsville on Friday at the Cranberry Classic at Assumption High School.

The Dons’ girls opened the tournament with a 54-29 rout of Pittsville (0-2), improving to 3-1 this season.

The Columbus boys, who won a one-point game against Rib Lake earlier this week, dropped a one-point decision to Pittsville (1-0) 34-33 on Friday. The Dons are now 1-1.

Jessica Trad had 15 points and Abby Baierl added 14 for the Columbus girls.

The Dons led by 12 at halftime, then opened up a big lead with a dominating 20-2 run in the third quarter.

The Columbus boys were held to 17 points through three quarters, falling behind by nine, before making a run in the fourth quarter but coming up just short.

Evan Nikolai led the Dons with 15 points.

Both Columbus Catholic teams play Wisconsin Rapids Assumption on Saturday. The girls game starts at 1:45 p.m. and the boys will play at 8 p.m. The boys game will be broadcast on WDLB-AM 1450 and wdlbwosq.com.
