AUBURNDALE – Pittsville jumped out to a 22-point lead in the first half and went on to defeat Auburndale 29-8 in a Marawood Conference football game Friday night at Auburndale High School.
The win keeps Pittsville’s WIAA playoff hopes alive as it improves to 3-4 overall and 3-3 in the Marawood. Auburndale drops to 3-4 and 2-3 in the conference.
Pittsville must beat Stratford in its final game of the season to clinch a playoff spot, while the Apaches have to beat Stratford at home next week and beat Marathon in the finale on the road to make it to the postseason for the fourth year in a row.
Colten Ortner returned a punt for a touchdown just 1:06 into the game and Alec Kolar ripped off touchdown runs of 71 and 74 yards to put the Panthers up 22-0 by halftime.
Kurt Jankowski scored on a 5-yard touchdown run with 5:35 to go in the game for the Apaches’ only score.
Auburndale was held to 207 yards of total offense, 139 coming on the ground from Jankowski. The Apaches recovered three Pittsville fumbles but were unable to do anything with them.
Kolar finished with 213 yards rushing for Pittsville.
Auburndale hosts Stratford on Oct. 9 at 7 p.m. The game will be broadcast on WOSQ-FM 92.3 and wdlbwosq.com.
